Two popular Queensland artists will take to the stage for the Brisbane season of the Broadway production of South Pacific, winner of two Tony Awards, opening on 27 December at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC).

Acclaimed Australian singer, Christine Anu will play the role of Bloody Mary and actor Gyton Grantley, best known for his portrayal of Carl Williams in the Underbelly series, will play Luther Billis.

Lyndon Terracini, Artistic Director of Opera Australia says, “All of us at Opera Australia are thrilled that Christine Anu and Gyton Grantley will be joining our great cast for the Brisbane season of South Pacific. Christine is a charismatic performer who is exceptionally talented. She is also a role model for a generation of Indigenous performers who are having a major impact on Australia’s performing arts industry. Gyton brings a great comedic ability to everything he does and Brisbane audiences are in for something very special when he takes to the stage in his home town as Billis.”

The first Lincoln Center Theater production to tour Australia, South Pacific, just closed a successful season in Melbourne, following the Australian premiere season in Sydney where it became the highest selling show ever staged at Sydney Opera House.

Acclaimed opera star Teddy Tahu Rhodes and Australia’s best loved and four time Gold Logie award-winning actress Lisa McCune lead the stellar cast as Emile de Becque and Nellie Forbush.

Considered one of the finest musicals ever written, the score includes Some Enchanted Evening, I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair and There is Nothin’ Like a Dame. With a cast of 40 and an orchestra twice the size of most musicals, this international hit and landmark production begins its five week engagement at the Lyric Theatre, QPAC on 27 December 2012.
