More Than This by Jay McLean
Book Review by Hush Hush Biz Book Reviewer Jamie Campbell
Mikayla is having a bad day. Not only has she caught her boyfriend cheating on her with her best friend, but she returns home to find unspeakable tragedy in her family. Definitely not a good day.
After a chance encounter with nice guy Jake, she quickly moves into his house as she goes through the stages of grief and starts to repair her life.
Things heat up between Mikayla and Jake as their relationship flourishes. They finish their final year of high school, graduate, and then move on to college. All the while, trying to work out the ups and downs of their friendship.
This book is a young adult novel, however the themes are quite dark. There is also a lot of swearing… a whole lot. While this does not normally bother me, I did find it excessive and not entirely warranted.
I found something lacking with this book, it almost seemed like the excuses for the pair not getting together were purely to string out the story and grew repetitive. There was, however, a nice twist on the very back page of the book.
