Sony Music Entertainment Australia is proud to announce that the animated music video for the single ‘Rattle That Lock’, written by David Gilmour and Polly Samson, received its global premiere over the weekend. The stunning animation was created by Alasdair & Jock from Trunk Animation, the London based production house, under the creative directorship of Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis. ‘Rattle That Lock’ is the first track to be lifted from David Gilmour’s new album of the same name, which is released worldwide on Friday September 18th 2015.

David Gilmour said of the video: “I love animation when it does something that can’t be achieved any other way. The film Alasdair & Jock have made for ‘Rattle That Lock’ highlights a darkness in the song that couldn’t have been shown any other way.”

Polly Samson said “I think the animators have done a fine job: paying homage to Gustave Dore, bringing his illustrations for ‘Paradise Lost’ alive, making a powerful visual for the song.”

The black and white, hand drawn animation depicts various facets from John Milton’sParadise Lost’ from which ‘Rattle That Lock’ lyricist Polly Samson drew her inspiration. The poem itself encompasses twelve books concerning the Biblical story of ‘The Fall of Man’: the temptation of Adam and Eve by the fallen angel Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden.

The project needed a team who could not only bring the intricate narrative to life, but could do so in a manner that captured the depth, drama and scale of both David Gilmour’s song and the original poem. Having produced projects for The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Blur and Coldplay amongst others, Trunk directors Alasdair & Jock alongside producer Richard Barnett were in a rare position to take on such a task and set to work matching David Gilmour’s emblematic music with their dramatic visuals.

The ambitious video required a team of 12 animators, artists and compositors, working continuously over three months to bring the narrative and many technical elements together. The Trunk team developed the narrative and took its main inspiration from the first three books of Milton’s poem and utilised details from across all twelve volumes. Working with the talented sound designer Barnaby Templer and his team at Fonic, the film was brought to life with layered Foley and sound effects which were then delicately mixed with the ‘Rattle That Lock’ track.

The film follows the fall of Satan from the Kingdom of Heaven and his subsequent journey through Pandemonium, Purgatory and Chaos on his way to corrupt the virgin Earth. As the tale plays out, Satan takes on new forms as his character also progresses. Starting as the beautiful yet fearful Fallen Angel he is first re-born as a sinister, masterful Cormorant before finally transforming into a lithe Serpent that wreaks havoc on the Earth in a cloud of jealousy and rage.

Following the track’s original premier on the UK’s BBC Radio 2 Chris Evans Breakfast Show, ‘Rattle That Lock’ has already received widespread critical acclaim and has shot into Spotify’s ‘Top 10 Global Viral Tracks’. With the placeholder ‘audio’ video having clocked up well over a million views in one week – the epic new animated clip will only add fuel to the fire making ‘Rattle That Lock’ one of the most anticipated rock releases of 2015.
