Brisbane Powerhouse presents Vinyl Viagra
You know Rhonda Burchmore for her acclaimed performances in productions such as Mamma Mia and Hot Shoe Shuffle – now see her as you’ve never seen her before as she unleashes her inner vixen for the premier of Vinyl Viagra at Brisbane Powerhouse from Wednesday 28 – Saturday 31 May 2014.
Celebrating the most iconic women of show business, Vinyl Viagra sees Ms B adorned on stage by two of Brisbane’s talented male dancers to deliver a sassy repertoire, including a cheeky, inspired version of Beyoncé’s ‘Single Ladies’, performed as a tap dance and Pink’s ‘Get The Party Started’, channelling Bassey’s commanding show-girl style.
According to Burchmore, Vinyl Viagra is “a breakaway from the shows I’ve done previously.”
“It’s about all the vixens; the strong empowered women who are survivors and inspirations, going way back to the likes of Marlene Dietrich, through to Cher and right up to Beyoncé, Pink and Kylie. However, I’m not trying to imitate them – I’m paying tribute to them in my own style as a party and celebration of life.”
Following her acclaimed appearances at Brisbane Powerhouse in Cry Me a River: The World of Julie London in 2012 and Little Orphan TrAshley in 2013, Burchmore was requested to create a new show specifically for the venue.
“I was invited by Brisbane Powerhouse to create a show that was left-of-centre for me, and Vinyl Viagra is the show we came up with.
“It was written and directed by Dean Bryant, with musical direction by Mathew Frank and I get to have some fun with two of the hottest toy-boys in the business joining me on-stage. The aim is to have temperatures soaring and pulses racing when Vinyl Viagra hits the Visy Theatre!”
Hailed as one of Australia’s most iconic ‘triple-threats’, Burchmore has forged an admired career in show business, as acknowledged by her receipt of a medal of the Order of Australia as part of the Australia Day Honours List this year.
Vinyl Viagra coincides with Wrecking Ball running as a double bill at Brisbane Powerhouse. Audiences can purchase a special cabaret package to attend both shows in the same evening.
