Cast and crew of US Cult Hit Sushi Girl to walk the ‘red mile’ at film’s Australian Premiere on Gold Coast

Straight from its North American sell-out premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal and acclaimed screenings at Toronto After Dark Film Festival, the Gold Coast Film Festival presented by Pacific Fair Shopping Centre (GCFF April 18-28 2013), in collaboration with the Supanova Pop Culture Expo (Melbourne April 13-14, 2013, Gold Coast 20-21, 2013), has today announced it will host the Australian premiere of the independent ‘cult classic in the making’, SUSHI GIRL, at 9.00pm on Friday April 19 at Birch, Carroll and Coyle Cinemas at Pacific Fair Shopping Centre on the Gold Coast.  Meanwhile Supanova Pop Culture Expo will host the SUSHI GIRL cast and crew to special panels, sneak peeks plus autograph sessions.

SUSHI GIRL director/writer Kern Saxton will be joined on the red carpet at the GCFF and at Supanova by the film’s writer/producer Destin Pfaff and members of the powerhouse cast including Tony Todd (CANDYMAN), Noah Hathaway (THE NEVERENDING STORY) and James Duval (DONNIE DARKO).

“I was drawn to this film. The plot is gripping and comes to an unforeseen and memorable conclusion. Saxton’s debut is impressive, and I’m confident the film secures him a future in the genre. The cast, all of whom are famous genre actors, are excellent and quite mesmerizing in their performance of this dark tale. Mark Hamill is particularly sinister and his performance unnerved me to the core.” Casey Marshall Siemer – FESTIVAL DIRECTOR.

As well as walking the ‘red mile’, the internationally acclaimed cast will participate in an intimate Q&A prior to the screening inviting the GCFF audience to learn what was behind making a film that “…has enough bloodshed to make even Tarantino blush” (Serena Whitney, Dread Central) and what it was like to work alongside fellow lead cast member, Mark Hamill (STAR WARS).

The internationally acclaimed cast will participate in further Q&A sessions (with exclusive footage being screened from the film) at both Supanova Melbourne and Supanova Gold Coast including a free signing session featuring a collectable SUSHI GIRL movie poster.

“It’s such a natural fit for Supanova in catering to our slightly older demographic of fans as the film brings together so many stars from movies that are iconic in the world of pop culture. And realistically this is what we as films both internationally and domestically. In this increasingly online  both internationally and domestically. In this increasingly online world the interactive and tactile nature of our events allows audiences to engage personally, directly, with some of the world’s biggest stars, and its aspiring, burgeoning talent, and hosting the cast and crew of SUSHI GIRL is a wonderful step forward into that reality.” Daniel Zachariou – EVENT DIRECTOR

For that very reason Supanova is very excited to be continuing to partner with the GCFF in bringing the SUSHI GIRL ensemble ‘down under’.

SUSHI GIRL is the directional debut film of Kern Saxton, a director to ‘watch in 2013 and beyond’ and one which pays tribute to Saxton’s favourite directors namely Hitchcock, Tarantino, Scorsese and Kubrick.  A gritty, stylistic and definitely not-for-the-faint hearted indie film (with one hell of a soundtrack), SUSHI GIRL centres on the compelling character, “Fish” (Hathaway) who has spent six years in jail after successfully keeping his mouth shut about those involved in the robbery that sent him to prison.  The night he is released, the men he protected with silence celebrate his freedom with a congratulatory dinner. The meal is a lavish array of sushi, served off the naked body of a beautiful young woman. The sushi girl seems catatonic, trained to ignore everything in the room, even if things become dangerous. Sure enough, the four unwieldy thieves can’t help but open old wounds in an attempt to find their missing loot.

If SUSHI GIRL’s black belt in bloodshed doesn’t keep you on the edge of your seat or the confronting realisation that Luke Skywalker has turned into a depraved, sick-minded psychopath, the kick ass cameos certainly will with Michael Biehn (Aliens), Sonny Chiba (Kill Bill Vol. 1), Jeff Fahey (Grindhouse), Danny Trejo (Machete) and David Dastmalchian (THE DARK KNIGHT) joining the SUSHI GIRL stellar cast ensemble.
