Music Review : ‘Saturn Return’ – Melbourne Ska Orchestra

‘Saturn Return’ – Melbourne Ska Orchestra
by Michelle Silaen

After the success of their award winning debut album, the Melbourne Ska Orchestra (MSO) made 2016 another great year. After releasing their second album, ‘Sierra-Kilo-Alpha’ in late April of last year, Nicky Bomba and the gang decided to announce that they will be treating us all with a third full length album titled ‘Saturn Return’.

Their new album consists of unreleased tracks that they recorded alongside the mix within the ‘Sierra-Kilo-Alpha’. Starting off the album with the track ‘Here We Go’, effectively bringing listeners the fun and upbeat sound of all eleven tracks within the album. As a predecessor to reggae music, ska incorporates elements of jazz, R&B, with elements of rock, it is impossible to not bob your head when listening.

The introduction to all the tracks gets you right into the music and allows you to go with the songs. The melody and rhythm of these tracks sucks you in immediately and has a familiar tune to it that you can’t seem to forget. Each track starts off immediately and keeps the rhythm jumpy and light, with sounds of trumpets, trombones, saxophones and drums to keep the beats lively. Each track tells a story through lyrics, which is accompanied by the tone and rhythm of the instruments behind it. This is definitely one of the rare albums that allow listeners to listen to the tracks in the order displayed as it undoubtedly tells a whole narrative by the end.

Keeping with their familiar fun, full bodied sounds this album does not disappoint in giving us what we wanted from musicians like this. Melbourne Ska Orchestra have also announced that they will start off 2017 with their SKA-BQ live shows where Staturn Return will be available in USB formats, which you can also find at the MSO website. www.melbourneskaorchestra.com
