SPA WELCOMES PAUL FLETCHER AS NEW MINISTER FOR COMMUNICATIONS, CYBER SECURITY AND THE ARTS
Screen Producers Australia CEO, Matthew Deaner, has welcomed Paul Fletcher MP as the new Minister for Communications, Cyber Security and the Arts, following newly elected Prime Minister Scott Morrison announcing his Cabinet on Sunday afternoon.
“We congratulate Paul Fletcher MP on his appointment to this critical portfolio in a time of dynamic industry and social change in the consumption and delivery of media and content services”, said Deaner.
“Paul has strong credentials for this portfolio having worked closely with former Communications Ministers Richard Alston AO and Malcolm Turnbull. He is well-equipped to address the complex regulatory, economic and cultural challenges facing Australia’s screen industry in the converged media environment”, said Deaner.
“The key issue for the new Minister to address will be content regulation of streaming services”, said Deaner.
“As the incoming Minister has reflected in his press release, our communications sector – and local content quotas in particular – make a profound contribution to our national identity and are vital in maximising economic and social contributions to Australian society.”
“These measures are essential in ensuring Australia’s identity, character and cultural diversity can be reflected both now and for future generations”, said Deaner.
“We thank the outgoing Minister, Senator the Hon Mitch Fifield, for his contributions to our sector, and look forward to working with Minister Fletcher MP across a range of priority issues facing our sector.”
