The highly anticipated feature film Predestination, starring Ethan Hawke, from Queensland directors Peter and Michael Spierig has returned to Queensland for post-production at renowned post facility Cutting Edge.
Developed and produced in Queensland by Blacklab Entertainment’s Tim McGahan and Wolfhound Pictures’ Patrick McDonald with the support of Screen Queensland, Predestination stars two-time Oscar® nominee Ethan Hawke and AFI/AACTA award-winning Australian actor Sarah Snook.
Predestination chronicles the life of a Temporal Agent sent on an intricate series of time-travel journeys designed to ensure the continuation of his law enforcement career for all eternity. Now, on his final assignment, the Agent must pursue the one criminal that has eluded him throughout time.
Written and directed by Peter and Michael Spierig Predestination is based on the science fiction short story All You Zombies by Robert A. Heinlein who was known as the “dean of science fiction writers” and one of the most influential and controversial authors of the genre in his time.
Screen Queensland CEO, Bryan Lowe said he is delighted that the successful filmmakers are back in their home state for this crucially important part of the film making process.
Mr Lowe said the film will spend 33% of its budget in Queensland creating approximately 93 full time equivalent jobs.
“The sci-fi crime thriller has been supported by Screen Queensland through Production Investment and use of the Revolving Film Finance Fund. The production also received development finance and support for two production attachments.
“The Spierigs are twin brothers known for their smart genre films including Undead (2004) and Daybreakers (2009) which grossed more than $65 million at the box office worldwide. Predestination will be their third feature film,” he said.
Mr Lowe also commented, “Cutting Edge is an excellent facility here in Brisbane that has been consistently working on Australian and international projects.
“Entrusting Cutting Edge with post-production of the film is a testament to the world class facilities we have in Queensland,” he said.
Cutting Edge CEO Michael Burton continued: “What’s especially satisfying for us is the Queensland connection. We began in Queensland, the Spierigs hail from here, as does DP Ben Nott, and it’s great to see the project being delivered here.
“Michael and Peter have a wonderful relationship with Adrian Hauser, Cutting Edge’s Senior Digital Intermediate Colourist, who is fresh off the back of The Great Gatsby. We’re excited about what will come of this great meeting of creative minds,” he said.
Predestination Producer Patrick McDonald said “It is fantastic to be in Brisbane bringing such an iconic piece of sic-fi to the big screen. Screen Queensland’s support of the project right from the development stage has been invaluable in realising the film from here is Queensland.”
Gold Coast distribution company Pinnacle Films is releasing the film in Australia.
Screen Queensland supports and promotes a creative and innovative screen industry through its diverse range of screen funding programs that support both film and TV projects.
