Moss plays Samantha Lake, a journalist drawn into the orbit of Zoe Shannon (Hudson), the magnetic CEO of a billion-dollar health empire. When clients and starlets begin to vanish — including Chloe Benson (Kaia Gerber) — Samantha unearths a terrifying truth beneath the glossy surface.
Minghella, who first read the script in 2018, describes
Shell as “a movie I just wanted to see and share with an audience.” Channeling the sharp satire of Death Becomes Her and the eerie allure of LA noir, he delivers a film that is equal parts camp, sci-fi, and cautionary tale.
Visually, Shell is a feast — glowing with retro-futuristic design, practical effects, and in-camera stunts that echo the golden age of 90s genre filmmaking. Cinematographer Drew Daniels and production designer Susie Mancini craft a surreal LA where beauty and danger coexist.
Elisabeth Moss delivers a riveting performance, oscillating between humor and dread, while Kate Hudson stuns as the perfectly poised and dangerously persuasive Zoe Shannon. Their chemistry burns with tension and intelligence.
Filmed entirely in Los Angeles, Shell captures the city’s paradox — the sunshine shimmer masking a carnivorous undercurrent. As Minghella puts it, “LA has this surface beauty, but beneath it, there’s something quite dark — which is emblematic of Shell itself.”
