The heartbeat of Australian rock has skipped its final beat. Midnight Oil confirmed on Today Tuesday 20th that Rob Hirst, the man whose ferocious, kinetic drumming provided the “engine room” for the country’s most iconic musical exports, has died peacefully surrounded by his family.
Hirst’s passing comes after what the band described as a “heroic fight” against stage three pancreatic cancer, a diagnosis he received in 2023 shortly after the band’s final tour.
More Than a Drummer
While many will remember Hirst for his “furious” energy behind the kit—famously denting a corrugated iron water tank during performances of The Power and the Passion—his impact reached far beyond the rhythm section. Alongside Jim Moginie, Hirst was a primary architect of the Oils’ sound and message.

Hirst wasn’t just a musician; he was a scholar of the world. Educated in law but driven by the “real-politik” of his upbringing, he helped turn radical 80s politics into mainstream pub-rock bangers. Whether he was advocating for Indigenous land rights or environmental conservation, Hirst’s sticks were as much a tool for justice as they were for music.
Even in his final years, Hirst used his platform to advocate for awareness of pancreatic cancer and spoke openly about his support for voluntary assisted dying, showing the same bravery in his personal battle that he displayed on stage for nearly five decades.
The Legacy Left Behind
Beyond Midnight Oil, Hirst’s creative spirit spilled into projects like Ghostwriters, Backsliders, and The Break. He remained a student of the craft until the very end, once remarking that despite his illness, he felt “incredibly fortunate” for the life he had led.
Rob Hirst is survived by his wife, Leslie Holland, and his three daughters. The family has requested that those wishing to honor his memory consider donating to PanKind (Pancreatic Cancer Australia) or Support Act.
