Steven Spielberg has long been one of cinema’s greatest storytellers, and after watching Disclosure Day in a packed room of critics, it was fascinating to see the reactions. Some rushed straight for the exits, while others lingered, quietly reflecting on what they had just seen. I was firmly in the latter group.
For me, this was Spielberg doing what he does best—combining spectacle, mystery and human emotion into a gripping cinematic experience. Drawing on themes that have fascinated him throughout his career, from Close Encounters of the Third Kind to E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Disclosure Day feels like a natural continuation of his lifelong fascination with the unknown.
The film explores government secrecy surrounding unidentified aerial phenomena, weaving together conspiracy, science fiction and political thriller elements into an engrossing story that feels surprisingly relevant to today’s world. Spielberg and screenwriter David Koepp build an intriguing narrative around hidden truths, misinformation and humanity’s desire to understand its place in the universe.
The cast is exceptional. Emily Blunt delivers one of the film’s strongest performances as television weather reporter Margaret Fairchild. She brings depth, vulnerability and determination to a character who becomes central to unlocking the film’s mysteries. Blunt carries much of the emotional weight of the story and does so brilliantly.
Josh O’Connor is equally compelling as Dr Daniel Kellner, a cybersecurity expert drawn into a web of secrets that stretches back decades. His performance is thoughtful and layered, making him an engaging guide through the film’s increasingly complex revelations.
Colin Firth relishes playing the film’s antagonist, FBI-linked WARDEX chief Noah Scanlon. Firth’s ability to balance authority with menace gives the character genuine intensity, while Colman Domingo provides gravitas as Hugo Wakefield, a former insider trying to expose the truth. Together, the ensemble works seamlessly, creating believable relationships and high emotional stakes.
Visually, Spielberg remains a master craftsman. Whether staging large-scale action sequences, suspenseful chases or awe-inspiring encounters, he demonstrates why he remains one of cinema’s most accomplished directors. The film’s set pieces are impressive, particularly a spectacular train sequence that will have audiences on the edge of their seats.
At over two hours, Disclosure Day is certainly long, but it never lost my attention. There are moments when the story becomes dense with mythology and exposition, yet Spielberg’s confident direction keeps the narrative moving forward. More importantly, the film asks big questions about truth, transparency, faith and humanity without losing sight of its characters.
What makes Disclosure Day particularly engaging is how timely it feels. With growing public interest in unexplained aerial phenomena and increasing debates about government transparency, Spielberg taps into contemporary anxieties while delivering an entertaining blockbuster experience.
This is a film that rewards the big-screen experience. It may not quite reach the emotional heights of Spielberg’s greatest classics, but it remains a thoughtful, ambitious and highly entertaining science-fiction thriller from a filmmaker who continues to explore the mysteries that have fascinated him for decades.
Disclosure Day is a journey well worth taking.
