There are blockbuster films, there are great films, and then there are cinematic events that remind audiences why the big screen remains the greatest place to experience storytelling.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is one of those rare films.
Inspired by Homer’s timeless literary masterpiece, Nolan has delivered what may well become one of the defining achievements of modern cinema. This isn’t simply another adaptation of a classic tale—it’s an immersive, emotionally charged and visually astonishing experience that demonstrates why Nolan continues to sit among the greatest filmmakers of our generation.
Shot entirely using IMAX Film Cameras across six countries, The Odyssey is the first feature film ever made entirely in this format. Every frame feels monumental, transporting audiences into Ancient Greece with breathtaking authenticity and scale. The film’s extraordinary visuals are elevated by Academy Award-winning cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, whose collaboration with Nolan reaches another remarkable milestone. Together they create images that are both intimate and colossal, making viewers feel as though they are sailing beside Odysseus through every storm, every battle and every emotional triumph.
Nolan’s direction is masterful. His trademark attention to practical filmmaking, real locations and in-camera effects gives The Odyssey a tangible realism rarely seen in today’s effects-heavy blockbusters. Every sequence feels earned, every landscape authentic and every challenge physically real.
Leading the cast is Matt Damon, delivering what I genuinely believe is one of the finest performances of his remarkable career.
Having appeared in more than 85 films, Damon has created many unforgettable characters, but his portrayal of Odysseus may stand above them all. His commitment is evident in every scene, bringing extraordinary emotional depth, vulnerability, resilience and humanity to one of literature’s greatest heroes. The physical transformation alone is remarkable, reflecting the dedication required for such an enormously demanding production.
If awards season overlooks this performance, it will be one of the biggest surprises of the year.
Anne Hathaway is exceptional, bringing grace and emotional strength to her role, while Tom Holland once again proves why he is one of the most exciting actors of his generation. His performance is layered, confident and deeply affecting. Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron and John Leguizamo all contribute memorable performances that enrich an already extraordinary ensemble.
What impressed me most was the sheer ambition behind every aspect of the production.
The costume department created an astonishing 5,300 costumes, supported by more than 500 costume professionals working across Los Angeles, Morocco, Italy, Greece, Iceland, Scotland, Spain, England, New York and New Zealand. Nearly 90 makeup artists collaborated on prosthetics, sculpting and character transformations, while international hair and makeup teams worked seamlessly across multiple countries to create a believable mythological world.
The scale of craftsmanship behind the scenes is simply staggering and deserves recognition alongside the performances on screen.

For almost three hours, I found myself completely immersed—not simply watching a film but wondering how such an extraordinary production had even been possible. Every department appears to be operating at the very highest level, from production design and visual effects to sound, music and cinematography.
One of the film’s most touching moments comes in its dedication to David Keighley, the late Chief Quality Officer at IMAX and a driving force behind many of the format’s greatest technical innovations. His collaboration with Christopher Nolan and Hoyte van Hoytema helped push IMAX filmmaking to unprecedented heights, and The Odyssey stands as a fitting tribute to his remarkable legacy.

Christopher Nolan has often challenged audiences to think differently through films such as Memento, Inception, Interstellar and Oppenheimer. With The Odyssey, he adds something even greater to his legacy—a mythic adventure that is emotionally rich, technically groundbreaking and visually unforgettable.
This is filmmaking at its absolute finest.
It is ambitious without becoming overwhelming. Spectacular without sacrificing emotion. Intimate despite its enormous scale.
Very few films compel me to immediately want to see them again.
The Odyssey is one of them.
This is not just one of Christopher Nolan’s greatest achievements—it is one of the finest cinematic experiences I have had in many years.
Verdict:
Christopher Nolan has once again raised the bar for epic filmmaking. Supported by the extraordinary cinematography of Hoyte van Hoytema and anchored by what may be Matt Damon’s career-best performance, The Odyssey is destined to become one of the landmark films of this generation.
Don’t simply watch it.
