In this Hush Hush Biz Spotlight, Sue shares how her journey began, what inspires her, some of the most memorable requests she’s received, and why creating unforgettable wedding ceremonies is so much more than saying “I do.”
Sue, let’s begin at the beginning. What first inspired you to become a wedding celebrant, and was there a defining moment when you realised this was your true calling?
Becoming an independent wedding celebrant felt like a natural progression and the moment I realised I could bring together everything I love into one truly meaningful profession. My background as a Registrar gave me a deep understanding of ceremonies, but I longed for the freedom to create something far more creative and unique for every couple.
Alongside my work as a Registrar, I built a career as a personal stylist and spent many years writing fashion editorials for magazines. I soon recognised that these careers all shared a common thread – storytelling, creativity and helping people feel confident and celebrated.
As a celebrant, I can weave together a couple’s love story in a way that is authentic, heartfelt and completely unique. My experience as a stylist also enables me to help couples look and feel their absolute best, offering guidance on posture, positioning and movement during key moments of the ceremony so everything feels natural, elegant and relaxed.
That realisation – that I could combine my passion for storytelling, ceremony, style and creating unforgettable experiences – was the defining moment I knew I had found my true calling.
Before becoming an independent celebrant, you worked as a Registrar. How did that experience shape the way you now create more personal and meaningful ceremonies?
My experience as a Registrar gave me an excellent foundation and experience regarding the legal aspects of marriage, which continues to benefit my couples today. Many appreciate having someone who can guide them through both the legal requirements and the ceremonial aspects of their wedding, providing reassurance and support from the very beginning.
Working as a Registrar also helped me realise what was missing. Ceremonies were necessarily bound by legislation, with a prescribed script and very little opportunity to personalise the experience. I would often be conducting several weddings in one day, meeting each couple only moments before the ceremony began. There simply wasn’t the time or flexibility to truly get to know each couple or tell their unique story.
As a celebrant, I can now offer the complete opposite experience. I dedicate my full attention to just one ceremony each day, spending time getting to know my couples, learning about their journey together, and creating a completely unique ceremony that reflects their personalities, values and love story. It allows me to include symbolic rituals and personal touches that transform the ceremony from a legal formality into the emotional heart of their wedding day.

You’ve received the prestigious Hitched Wedding Award for both 2025 and 2026. What does that recognition mean to you personally, and what do you believe couples value most about your approach?
Winning the Hitched Wedding Award for both 2025 and 2026 has been an incredible honour, especially because it wasn’t something I entered. The awards are based entirely on genuine reviews and feedback from couples, so to know that they took the time to share their experiences means the world to me. It is one of the most rewarding forms of recognition I could receive because it comes directly from the people whose wedding day I had the privilege of being part of.
I believe couples value the fact that every ceremony I create is completely unique. Rather than following a template, I take the time to get to know each couple, weaving their personalities, memories and love story into a ceremony that feels authentic, meaningful and uniquely theirs. While I love the timeless traditions of a wedding ceremony, being an independent celebrant gives me the creative freedom to blend those cherished elements with personal stories, heartfelt vows and symbolic rituals, creating a ceremony that resonates with both the couple and their guests.
Couples also appreciate the additional support I bring through my background as a personal stylist. Helping them with posture, positioning and movement during the ceremony enables them to feel relaxed, confident and completely at ease, allowing them to focus on enjoying every precious moment. It’s these thoughtful touches, together with the personal relationships I build with my couples, that I believe make the experience so memorable.

Every couple has their own story. When you first meet your clients, how do you uncover what makes their relationship unique and turn that into a ceremony that truly reflects them?
I spend time getting to know my couples through relaxed conversations, encouraging them to share how they met, the milestones they’ve celebrated, the challenges they’ve overcome, and the little moments that define their relationship. It’s often the smallest details – the shared jokes, quirky habits or heartfelt memories – that reveal who they truly are. I then weave those details into a unique ceremony that is warm, engaging and deeply personal. Every word is written from scratch, ensuring no two ceremonies are ever the same.
I also encourage couples to include personal vows, meaningful readings or symbolic rituals that reflect their beliefs, cultures or family traditions.
My goal is for guests to leave feeling they haven’t simply witnessed a wedding ceremony – they’ve experienced the couple’s love story. When couples tell me afterwards, “That was so us,” I know I’ve achieved exactly what I set out to do.
One of the things that makes you stand out is your attention to styling and presentation during the ceremony. Can you tell us how you prepare couples so they not only feel relaxed but also look natural and confident on one of the biggest days of their lives?
I believe that when couples feel confident and relaxed, it naturally shines through in every photograph and every moment of their ceremony. That’s why I provide a rehearsal at their venue a few days before the wedding, giving them the opportunity to become familiar with the ceremony and enjoy the experience without feeling anxious or overwhelmed.
During the rehearsal, I guide them through every stage of the ceremony – from where to stand and when to move, to exchanging rings and making eye contact with one another. I also share simple styling tips on posture, positioning and graceful movement, helping them feel comfortable and look effortlessly natural throughout.
My background as a personal stylist means I pay attention to the finer details that can make a real difference. Whether it’s helping a bride make a beautiful entrance, perfecting that iconic dip kiss as newlyweds, and even offering a little guidance with their first dance (a gentle nod to my experience as a dancer) my aim is to ensure everything flows seamlessly.
These thoughtful preparations allow couples to stop worrying about what comes next and simply immerse themselves in the moment. The result is a ceremony that feels relaxed, authentic and joyful, while also creating beautiful, natural memories for their photographer and videographer to capture forever.

Wedding trends continue to evolve. Have you noticed couples becoming more adventurous or personal with their ceremonies, and are there any trends you particularly enjoy?
Absolutely. Today’s couples are moving away from the idea of a ‘one-size-fits-all’ ceremony and are embracing celebrations that genuinely reflect who they are. Rather than simply following tradition, they want their ceremony to tell their story, celebrate their personalities and create meaningful memories for everyone present. I find that incredibly exciting because creativity has always been at the heart of my work.
I meet with couples several months before their wedding, giving us plenty of time to explore ideas together. Some arrive with a clear vision, while others are looking for inspiration. I love helping them discover meaningful ways to personalise their ceremony, whether that’s writing secret vows, incorporating symbolic rituals, involving loved ones, or adding unique touches that represent their journey together.
One trend I particularly enjoy is the celebration of different cultures and family traditions. When couples come from different backgrounds, I can seamlessly blend customs, rituals and symbolic elements into the ceremony, creating a beautiful celebration that honours both families while remaining authentic to the couple.
I also love seeing ceremonies become more inclusive. Children, parents, grandparents, close friends and even beloved pets are increasingly playing meaningful roles. For blended families especially, involving children in symbolic moments can be incredibly emotional, celebrating not only the marriage but the coming together of a new family.
For me, there is no greater trend than authenticity. Every ceremony should feel personal, heartfelt and completely unique to the couple. When guests leave saying, “That was so them,” I know we’ve created something truly unforgettable.

You’ve no doubt witnessed some unforgettable moments over the years. Without naming names, what’s one of the most unusual, funny or heartwarming requests you’ve ever been asked to include in a ceremony?
One of the most memorable ceremonies I’ve had the privilege to conduct was an outdoor wedding beside a flowing stream, blending a traditional wedding ceremony with meaningful Sri Lankan rituals. I love creating multicultural ceremonies because they offer such a wonderful opportunity to honour both families and celebrate two cultures becoming one.
Guests were intrigued to see coconuts and a water jug displayed on the ceremony table, not realising they would soon become part of some symbolic traditions. During the ceremony, the couple’s fingers were gently bound together with a blessed thread to symbolise their union, before water was poured over their linked hands, representing a love that would continue to flow throughout their lives. The ceremony concluded with the joyful tradition of breaking coconuts in the aisle, symbolising new beginnings. Every detail was thoughtfully chosen, including a beautiful lavender colour palette to represent love and devotion. As a personal touch, I decorated the ceremony table with freshly cut lavender from my own garden, adding both fragrance and sentiment to the occasion. It was a ceremony filled with symbolism, emotion and cultural richness – one that perfectly demonstrated how a wedding ceremony can tell a couple’s story while honouring the traditions that mean the most to them.
Many people think a celebrant’s role ends once the ceremony is over. What other services or support do you provide behind the scenes that couples may not realise are part of your work?
Many people are surprised to discover that my role extends far beyond writing and delivering the ceremony. From the moment I first meet a couple, I’m there to guide, support and reassure them throughout their wedding journey.
One of the aspects couples value most is the personal styling and ceremony coaching I provide. An on-site rehearsal before the wedding allows a couple to feel relaxed and confident through every stage of the ceremony.
Behind the scenes, I also liaise closely with venue teams, photographers, videographers, musicians and other suppliers to ensure everyone understands the ceremony’s timing and key moments. My aim is for everything to feel calm, seamless and perfectly co-ordinated, allowing the couple to simply relax and enjoy their day.
Attention to detail is something I’m passionate about. As the celebrant standing beside the couple during many of their most treasured photographs, I carefully consider my own presentation too. Drawing on my background as a personal stylist, I choose an outfit that complements the venue, season and colour palette, whether that’s timeless elegance for a formal wedding or embracing a themed celebration. My role is to enhance the overall aesthetic and ensure every element of the ceremony feels beautifully considered. For example, a Valentine’s Day wedding inspired the choice of a striking red dress to complement the romantic red roses adorning the venue. A deep claret dress was selected to honour the rich cultural traditions of a multicultural Vietnamese wedding, while a soft pink dress harmonised beautifully with the delicate pink roses displayed throughout an outdoor venue. Each outfit was carefully chosen to ensure every visual element reflected the couple’s unique wedding theme.
Ultimately, my role is to remove stress, inspire confidence and create an experience where couples feel completely supported.
Planning a wedding can be overwhelming. What’s the one piece of advice you always give couples to help them stay focused on what really matters on their wedding day?
My advice: don’t lose sight of the reason you’re planning the wedding in the first place. It’s so easy to become caught up in the details – the dress, flowers, table plans, etc. but at the heart of it all is a promise between two people who have chosen to spend the rest of their lives together.
I encourage couples to pause throughout the day and truly take it all in. Hold hands at the end of the aisle, look into each other’s eyes during exchange of vows, and don’t worry if every tiny detail isn’t perfect. Those are the moments you’ll remember long after the cake has been eaten and the flowers have faded.
I also remind couples that a wedding isn’t a performance – it’s a celebration. Your guests aren’t there to judge whether everything goes exactly to plan; they’re there because they love you and want to share in your happiness. The most memorable weddings aren’t flawless – they’re the ones filled with genuine emotion, laughter and love. After all, the greatest memory they’ll take away from their wedding day won’t be whether everything was perfect – it will be how they felt when they married the person they love.

When guests leave one of your ceremonies, how do you hope they feel, and what legacy would you like every couple to remember about the experience you created together?
I hope every guest leaves feeling as though they’ve experienced something far more meaningful than simply witnessing a wedding. My aim is for them to feel emotionally connected to the couple’s journey – to laugh, to shed a happy tear, and to come away with a real sense of who the couple are and why they belong together.
For the couple themselves, I want the ceremony to become one of the most treasured memories of their wedding day. Long after the photographs have been framed, I hope they remember how they felt in that moment: completely present, deeply loved and surrounded by the people who matter most.
Nothing compares to witnessing the joy on a couple’s faces as they make their promises to one another. Those few precious moments set the tone for the entire celebration, creating an atmosphere of warmth, love and genuine connection that stays with everyone present.
It is an extraordinary privilege to be entrusted with such an important chapter in a couple’s lives. If, years later, they look back and say, “Our ceremony was the heart of our wedding day, and it couldn’t have been more ‘us’,” then I know I’ve created exactly the experience I set out to deliver.
When you look back over all the weddings you’ve been privileged to be part of, what has love taught you?
Being part of so many love stories has taught me that there is no single definition of love. Every couple expresses it differently, yet the strongest relationships all share the same foundations – kindness, trust, friendship, resilience and a commitment to choosing each other, every single day.
I’ve had the privilege of witnessing couples celebrate during life’s happiest moments, as well as hearing the challenges they’ve overcome together. Time and again, I’ve seen that it’s often the difficult chapters that strengthen a relationship the most. Love isn’t about perfection; it’s about standing side by side through every season of life.
Every ceremony reminds me that the smallest gestures often carry the greatest meaning – a reassuring glance, a squeeze of the hand, a shared smile or a heartfelt promise. Those authentic moments are far more powerful than any grand gesture.
Above all, love has taught me never to take these moments for granted. It is an extraordinary privilege to be invited into one of the most important days of a couple’s lives, and I feel incredibly honoured every time I’m entrusted to tell their story. Each ceremony leaves me inspired, reminding me that love, in all its wonderfully unique forms, is something truly worth celebrating.
