Remembering a producer whose remarkable career helped shape Australian television.

The Australian television industry has farewelled Irene Dobson, a highly respected producer whose career spanned decades and whose contribution to the industry earned her the admiration of many of her peers.
Irene began her journey at Crawford Productions in 1970, starting in the typing pool before working her way through the ranks to become an A-grade producer. Her career is a testament to experience, determination and a deep understanding of the craft of television production.
From her early days at Crawford Productions to working on productions across Australia, the United States and international locations, Irene built an impressive body of work in an industry that demands dedication, resilience and the ability to bring creative visions to life.
While I did not know Irene particularly well personally, I knew of her reputation and standing in the industry. She was regarded as one of the best, and her name carried the kind of respect that is earned over many years of professional commitment and contribution.
Behind every successful television production is a team of people whose work helps bring stories to audiences. Producers play a vital role in that process, often working behind the scenes to turn ideas into reality. Irene’s long career and rise through the ranks reflect the experience and knowledge she brought to her profession.
Her passing also comes during an incredibly difficult time for the Dobson family, following the loss of her talented director brother, Kevin James Dobson, earlier this year, as well as their youngest sibling, Michael.
Irene passed away just two days before her 76th birthday, leaving behind her remaining siblings, Chris, Margarita and Jacquie, extended family and many people who valued her both personally and professionally.
As the Australian screen industry reflects on the people who have helped shape its history, Irene Dobson deserves to be remembered for the career she built, the productions she contributed to and the professional legacy she leaves behind.
Vale, Irene Dobson.
My condolences to Irene’s family, friends and all those across the industry who had the privilege of working alongside her.
