It was another excellent evening of theatre in Brisbane this week with Hummingbird Theatre Company presenting Alan Bennett’s award-winning ‘Talking Heads: with the first performance of A Lady of Letters staged by Julia Johnson & Woman of No Importance’ with Amanda McErlean.
Taking to the stage first up was Julia Johnson, Miss Ruddock working-class single woman who tells us how she likes to write to communicate. Julia’s strength of storytelling placing characters deftly around her in the space. Despite many laughs sometimes at her relentless letter writing and sometimes at her appalling utterances (that would have her cancelled in a moment today.) Most powerful was the subtle journey that revealed the true desperation and isolation of Irene.
Act 2 follows with Amanda McErlean as she embarks with her character of Miss Schofield where tonight she worked in her performance to the multiple characters and incredible minutiae of Peggy’s Office Life. Kept a strong connection with the audience throughout. Whenever Peggy said, “And we Laughed!” We all did too.
Beautiful sustained and moving final sequence in Hospital Bed. (Without giving too much away) Poignant Loneliness.
It was great to see both of these amazing female actors perform on stage tonight and highly recommend to go see them perform such a credit to what they do in Brisbane theatre and these roles are a treat to watch.
