Behind the Climbing Ropes: A Conversation with Brendan Devane on his film The Sound

In the realm where sci-fi and horror collide, Brendan Devane is orchestrating a film that ventures into uncharted cinematic territory. His upcoming project, The Sound, isn’t just another sci-fi horror—it’s an intense exploration of human endurance, fear, and survival set against the towering cliffs of rock climbing’s most extreme landscapes.

As the film wraps post-production, Devane reflects on the unique blend of talent, sound design, and visual storytelling that brings his vision to life.

This week, I had the pleasure of speaking with Brendan Devane at his home studio in Las Vegas via Zoom, where I also met his Australian Shepherd dog, Luna. Luna is more than a pet as she joins Devane on set, she has become something of a mascot, lifting spirits all around!

During our chat, Brendan talks about his film and how it came to make it as to his background, and his thoughts on current trends shaping the industry, from the challenges of indie filmmaking to the evolving dynamics in big studios and streaming.

A Cast That Climbs Above and Beyond
Devane’s cast is as diverse as it is impressive. Recent additions include David Clennon (The Thing, Gone Girl), Kyle Gass of Tenacious D fame, Jocelyn Hudon (The Strain, Pixels), and British climbing sensation Hazel Findlay. These names join an already remarkable ensemble of William Fichtner (Hypnotic), Alex Honnold (Free Solo), Brette Harrington (The Alpinist), and Adrian Ballinger (Edge of the Earth).

When asked about casting choices, Devane beams with pride.
“David Clennon was a dream to work with,” he shares. “The Thing was a huge inspiration for this project, so having David on board was an honor. Kyle Gass brought a dynamic energy, and Jocelyn Hudon’s ability to anchor key scenes was invaluable. Hazel Findlay, along with Alex, Brette, and Adrian, elevated the climbing authenticity to unparalleled heights.”

The Sound That Resonates
With a title like The Sound, it’s no surprise that audio design plays a pivotal role. Devane partnered with Skywalker Sound to create an auditory experience that complements the film’s gripping visuals.

“Sound had to be more than good—it had to be extraordinary,” he says. Brad Semenoff, supervising sound editor, and Jeff King, re-recording mixer and sound designer, took on the challenge.

King describes the intricacies of sound design:
“Our task was to design an auditory presence so powerful that it drives the characters—and the audience—to the brink of madness. Dolby Atmos gave us the tools to immerse viewers in the stunning yet terrifying environment.”

Adding another layer of depth is the original score by Smashing Pumpkins’ James Iha.
“James has crafted a soundscape that is haunting and emotionally resonant,” Devane enthuses. “From the beginning, music was a cornerstone of this project.”

Scaling New Heights
Filmed amidst the dramatic landscapes of Nevada’s Red Rocks and Washington State, The Sound merges breathtaking visuals with nerve-wracking tension. At its core is the tale of climbers facing the Forbidden Wall, an ascent as symbolic as it is perilous.

“Climbing is inherently cinematic,” Devane explains. “It’s about the struggle, the fear, and the triumph—elements that align perfectly with sci-fi horror.”

What Lies Ahead
As The Sound gears up for festival submissions and a commercial release, Devane reveals plans for a sequel. “There’s more to explore in this world,” he hints.

For Devane, the journey of making The Sound is as thrilling as the story itself.
“Every element, from casting to sound design, has been meticulously crafted to create an experience that lingers. I can’t wait for audiences to see—and hear—it.”

With its stellar cast, groundbreaking sound design, and evocative storytelling, The Sound is set to redefine the sci-fi horror genre. It’s not just a film; it’s a visceral experience that takes you to the edge—literally and figuratively.
