INTERVIEW WITH KARLIS ZAID CREATIVE ARTIST BEHIND LOVING THE ALIEN LIFE MUSIC OF DAVID BOWIE

‘Loving the Alien’ – A Spellbinding Bowie Celebration Lands in Melbourne

For fans of David Bowie, there’s a new theatrical experience that’s more than just a tribute — it’s a celestial journey through the life, music, and mystique of one of the most influential artists of our time. Loving the Alien, created by award-winning performer Karlis Zaid, takes centre stage at Arts Centre Melbourne from 3rd to 6th July in the venue’s newest performance space, The Showroom.

In our interview with Karlis Zaid, we discussed the artistic intention behind this production, and it’s clear this isn’t just a show — it’s a conversation. A deep dive into the many faces of Bowie, this rock’n’roll experience seeks to explore the layers behind the legend, from Ziggy Stardust to the Thin White Duke, and the quieter complexities of the man behind the mask.

Zaid, known for standout roles My Fair Lady, directed by Dame Julie Andrews, War Horse, Les Misérables, Jesus Christ Superstar (Harry M Miller), The Beautiful Losers, many more notable roles shares the spotlight with the dynamic Aurora Kurth (Rouge, Cheeky Cabaret, Medea), whose powerhouse vocals and stage presence bring a new dimension to Bowie’s catalogue. Musical direction comes from Andrew Patterson (Wicked, & Juliet, Eurobeat), with electrifying guitar by Aaron Syrjanen (Moulin Rouge, Sister Act, Kate Ceberano band).

The show blasts off with faithful recreations of Bowie’s era-defining anthems while offering heartfelt storytelling and moments of revelation. For those who saw Bowie live, it will be a nostalgic reminder of a life-changing performance. For new generations, it opens a window into the legacy of a true chameleon of rock and pop culture.

Zaid captures it best when he says the show is a love letter to Bowie — one that doesn’t shy away from the enigmatic, provocative, and often otherworldly nature of his genius.

Prepare to board the glam rocket to Mars. Loving the Alien is not just a show — it’s an experience that will ignite conversation, memories, and admiration for the man who truly fell to Earth.
