INTERVIEW WITH DISNEY CHANNEL’S SOPHIE REYNOLDS

Performing since the age of just three, Sophie Reynolds is on her way to stardom currently starring in the popular Disney XD series “Gamer’s Guide to Pretty Much Everything”. Playing the sweet and fun-loving Ashley, Reynolds is the only female character in the cast, but that doesn’t stop her from stealing the screen.

We spoke to Sophie about all things dancing, gaming and Disney:

HHB: You star in the Disney XD show “Gamer’s Guide to Pretty Much Everything”, can you tell us a bit about the show?
SR: “Gamer’s Guide” follows four professional gaming teenagers: Conor, Franklin, Wendell, and Ashley. They have a gaming team and compete in tournaments all over, but also go to high school just like every other kid. They get into tons of crazy adventures and it’s a lot of fun.

You play the only female character Ashley, tell us a bit about her.
Ashley is this really fun, sweet girl with a big personality. She is an incredible video gamer and a really loyal friend. Ashley definitely has this feisty spirit that I love. She never backs down from a challenge and isn’t afraid to stand up for herself and her friends.

What is it like being the only female character?
Ashley is the only female character in the main cast and in a way, that is a big responsibility because I am kind of representing girl gamers everywhere. The gaming world tends to be seen as a thing for boys and that is not true at all! There are so many amazing girl gamers out there and it’s fun to be able to play a girl like Ashley who is really breaking the stereotype. Plus, just like Ashley, some of my best friends are guys, so she’s definitely relatable to me. That being said, I am the only female in the main cast, but I am not the only girl all the time because we have some amazing female guest stars on the show!

How alike are you and Ashley?
I most relate to Ashley’s feisty spirit. She is always there to defend her friends as well as stick up for herself and I see myself in her a lot in that way. Plus, as I mentioned before, she always rolls with the boys and that is definitely a similarity we share.

What’s your favourite part about being on “Gamer’s Guide”?
The people! The people I get to work with everyday are some of the most amazing people I’ve ever met. The cast, the crew, and everyone involved in the show are such kind and hard-working people. It’s really a great environment to be in every day and I am so thankful for that.

The characters and show are about gaming, what games do you like to play?
I have played video games before, but I would not call myself a gamer, and definitely not a very good one! I do like to play though and always have a lot of fun. My favorite games are probably “Just Dance” and “Mario Kart,” but I like a variety!

How did you get into acting?
I actually got into acting because of dance! I started dancing when I was three years old and I absolutely loved it. A few years ago my dance teachers suggested I try acting class to add another element to my training as a performer. I got into an acting class and absolutely fell in love with it. Ever since I have been absolutely addicted to acting.

Were you a big Disney fan growing up?
I was a huge Disney fan! I loved all the Disney shows like “Hannah Montana” and “That’s So Raven” and I used to watch them all the time. Plus Disneyland is one of my favorite places ever and always has been! It’s been a super surreal experience for me being a part of the Disney family myself now and I have loved every second.

You’re trained in ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip hop and tap dance, very impressive! Will we see you dancing on “Gamer’s Guide to Pretty Much Everything”?
Thank you! Yes, I do dance on “Gamer’s Guide!” We had a huge dance episode season one and there is more dancing to see in season two. I love getting to dance on the show and combine two of my favorite things, acting and dancing.

Will you ever return to dancing as a career?
I’m not sure I will ever return to dancing as my main career, but I wouldn’t rule it out! I will always love to dance and I hope I can continue to use dance in my career in some way.

Who are some of your role models?
My mom is my biggest role model, but I also look up to so many different actors like Amy Poehler, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, just to name a few.

What do you think makes a good role model?
I think a good role model is made up of so many qualities. A role model is someone who is passionate, hard working, kind, and inspirational. Someone can inspire me through their work, how they treat others, what they say, or simply just by how they live their life.

What’s next for Sophie Reynolds?
I hope many things! I really want to try everything as an actor and I am so excited to see where the future takes me. Right now I am working on season two of “Gamer’s Guide,” which premieres July 18th. It has been a really fun season to film and I am excited for everyone to see it!

I also have a movie coming out soon called “Mostly Ghostly: One Night in Doom House.” The film is the third in the “Mostly Ghostly” series based on the books by R.L. Stine. I star as Cammie alongside Corey Fogelmanis and Blake Michael. It’s a crazy story and was a blast to shoot so I cannot wait for everyone to see it! The movie will be released September 6th on DVD, digital HD, and OnDemand.
