Today, Brisbane mourns the loss of one of its vibrant ladies, Jan Power, well-known for running Power Farmers food markets. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday night at 85 years old.
In a statement, her family said, “Brisbane has lost a true pioneer, but her spirit will live on in the markets she founded over 30 years ago, which we continue to run in her name; in the farmers she supported; and in the many people who share her passion for food and art. Jan’s legacy is one of community, good humour, and the celebration of good food. She leaves behind a rich heritage that will continue to inspire, and she will be greatly missed.”
Jan Power was born in Glen Innes in 1939 and grew up on a sheep property in Stanthorpe, an area famous for its cherry trees.
Over the years, she trained as a nurse and became a qualified cook from Cordon Bleu in London. She also worked as a radio food segments presenter on ABC, a TV presenter of restaurant and food stories on ABC and Channels 7, 8, and 10, and a food columnist for numerous publications, including The Courier-Mail and Gourmet Traveller. Additionally, she authored Setting the Scene, a history of performing arts in Queensland.
Jan also served as the Deputy Chairman of the Queensland Performing Arts Trust and was a member of the Brisbane City Council’s Arts and Festivals Board. In 1977, she was appointed the first Cultural Ambassador for the City of Brisbane, earning the nickname ‘Mrs Brisbane.’
Those who knew her held her in high esteem for her contributions and the community she built. This weekend, Natalie D’Alessandro, CEO & Founder of Her Wardrobe Markets, will honor Jan Power at her Wardrobe Markets for all she has done for Brisbane and for being an inspiration to others.
The family will release further details regarding a memorial service in the near future.
RIP Jan.
