To celebrate the exclusive release of documentary Banksy Does New York at Palace Centro Cinema, Brisbane urban artist Barek channeled the elusive artist to create a live art installation in the foyer on Opening Day, April 23.
Bringing together two of the venue’s renowned traits – exclusive releases and opening night events – Banksy Does New York was welcomed with open arms by patrons on the night. With a near full house, many showed up early to enjoy the pre-film reception with a DJ spinning tunes and to see Barek work his magic in creating a unique piece for the Centro foyer. Drawing on inspiration from Banksy pieces, Barek put his signature mark on the piece, with rats, flowers and a signature from the artist.
Chris Moukarbel, director of Banksy Does New York, cleverly collected and presents user-generated content in the film from residents and visitors of New York who were hungry to capture Banksy’s 31 art works in 31 days, during his October 2013 residency in New York City. An exhilarating survey and detailed documentation of Banksy’s city-wide exhibit, the film is at the same time a vibrant portrait of the city itself.
The canvas created by Barek has been kindly donated and one lucky patron will be able to walk away with this original piece of art. Entry details are available at box office upon purchase of a ticket.
Banksy Does New York screens exclusively at Palace Centro Cinema and more information can be found online at http://www.palacecinemas.com.au/.
