FILM BUZZ: Ron Howard’s Eden Filmed Entirely on the Gold Coast Released August 22nd

Breaking news today is that film Eden, the highly anticipated survival thriller directed by Academy Award-winner Ron Howard is set for release August 22nd. The film, which was shot entirely on the Gold Coast in 2023, will hit cinemas worldwide through distributor Vertical.

This powerful, fact-based drama was born from a story Howard encountered during a family trip to the Galapagos Islands some 15 years ago. The script, penned by Noah Pink (Tetris), unfolds the gripping tale of three groups of people who, in the wake of World War II, abandon modern society in search of paradise on an uninhabited island. What begins as an idealistic escape quickly turns into a brutal struggle for survival, as the unforgiving elements — and human nature — begin to tear them apart.

The film features a powerhouse cast including Jude Law, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Brühl, Sydney Sweeney, Toby Wallace, and Felix Kammerer, delivering intense performances that bring the psychological and physical battles to life. Adding to the emotional depth is a stirring original score by two-time Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer.

Ron Howard, whose previous survival epic Thirteen Lives was also met with acclaim, has expressed a deep connection to this project. He praised Queensland for its exceptional crews, diverse locations, and robust support from local government agencies. In his words, “This story has been a passion project for me for years, rooted in the incredible true events of people who left behind everything familiar in hopes of recreating themselves in the wild. The collision of personalities and the sheer will to survive are what drew me in. I hope audiences connect with its raw humanity and timeless themes.”

Although Eden premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, its debut faced an unfortunate disruption due to a medical emergency in the audience. Despite this and the challenges of securing a theatrical release for adult-themed survival dramas, the film has now found its platform and is ready to make its mark on audiences worldwide.

Eden was brought to life with the backing of Imagine Entertainment and AGC Studios, alongside financing from Library Pictures International, Medan Pictures, Copper Island Films, and Elevate Production Finance. The production also received strong support through Screen Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy, the City of Gold Coast, and the Australian Federal Government’s Location Offset.

This project not only showcases the storytelling power of one of Hollywood’s most respected directors, but it also places a well-deserved spotlight on the talent and capability of Queensland’s film industry. With its breathtaking locations, world-class crew, and compelling true story, Eden is set to become a standout cinematic experience in 2025.
