How interesting to see that in 2024 so far this year we have two rebooted films and both are musical adaptions from Broadway. The Colour Purple has had a big buzz on its release last week in America.
The film opens up with a great musical number and throughout the film, the cinema photography is outstanding in every frame, especially musical dance numbers are very Broadway with spectacular design, and lighting and outlines the costume fashion over all the decades from early 1900’s to 1950s.
The Colour purple takes you on the journey as lead star Fantasia Monique Barrino-Taylor brillant lead plays Celie is Torn apart from her sister and her children. The gruesome hardships show up with the men in her life her father and abusive husband. These scenes are cruel at times but effective for the film to how things were for most black women. Enter sultry singer Shug Avery, Taraji P. Henson, the bond develops that deepens into a sisterhood.
Taraji P. Henson is the standout when she hits the screen and gives a fine performance and looks every part of looking rich and glamorous as the deserted preacher’s daughter. Another standout is Danielle Brooks as the outrageous outspoken who plays Sofia, she steals the screen when present and has some very powerful scenes.

The Color Purple is a 2023 American coming-of-age musical period drama film directed by Blitz Bazawule. Marcus Gardley’s screenplay is based on the stage musical of the same name, which in turn is based on the 1982 novel of the same name by Alice Walker. It is the second film adaptation of the novel, following the 1985 film directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Spielberg and Quincy Jones. Spielberg and Jones return as producers for the 2023 film, along with the stage musical’s producers Scott Sanders and Oprah Winfrey, the latter of whom also starred in the 1985 film.
Overall it is a tad long but it is a deep-sensitive film that will appeal to mainly female audiences.
