In the summer of 2014, Bernard Jordan (Michael Caine) made global headlines. He staged a “great escape” from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a Normandy beach, commemorating their fallen comrades at the D-Day Landings’ 70th anniversary.
It was a story that captured the world’s imagination, as Bernie embodied the defiant, “can-do” spirit of a generation that was rapidly disappearing. However, it wasn’t the whole story. It was an inspirational yet sanitized retelling of one man’s struggle to come to terms with the lasting trauma of war.
Bernie’s adventure, spanning a mere 48 hours, also marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Rene (the late Glenda Jackson). The Great Escaper celebrates their enduring love, always with an eye to the lessons we might learn from the Greatest Generation.
Michael Caine, in his final acting role, delivers an emotional performance that tugs at the heartstrings. This must have been a profoundly moving film to conclude his illustrious career, especially alongside the veteran Glenda Jackson, who, despite her frail appearance, pours her heart into this love story.
Director Oliver Parker (Dad’s Army) adeptly captures each scene, framing flashbacks with justice to the entire cast. This film is a must-watch, as Caine and Jackson deliver impeccable performances together, creating a compelling narrative that resonates deeply.
