Taking my 20-month-old grandson to his very first cinema experience was a big moment—and what better introduction to the big screen than The Smurfs Movie? To my surprise (and delight), he sat through the entire film with wide-eyed wonder, fully captivated by the charming blue characters, catchy music, and colourful adventure. That alone speaks volumes!
This latest Smurf adventure brings new energy to the franchise, with a refreshed storyline that blends the fantasy Smurf Village with the real world. When the beloved Papa Smurf (voiced by John Goodman) is kidnapped by two evil wizards—Razamel and the infamous Gargamel—it’s up to the ever-brave Smurfette (voiced by Rihanna) to lead a rescue mission across dimensions. Along the way, the Smurfs team up with a host of new allies, learning valuable lessons about identity, bravery, and the power of unity.
The voice cast is top-notch, headlined by Rihanna, who brings heart and strength to Smurfette, and James Corden, whose signature charm and surprisingly strong vocals shine through. Other standout voices include Nick Offerman, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Octavia Spencer, and Kurt Russell—an impressive ensemble that adds texture and humour to every scene.
I particularly enjoyed the musical elements of the film. The song choices were fun and well-executed, adding rhythm and joy to the narrative. Kids will be dancing in their seats, and adults might find themselves tapping along too. It’s a bright, upbeat soundtrack that complements the film’s sense of wonder and adventure.
