“Brand Bollywood Downunder” takes viewers on a journey spanning from 1897 to 2023, revealing the story of the ‘Bollywoodization’ and globalization of Indian popular cinema through its enduring connection with Australia. This documentary invites you to delve beneath the colorful exterior of Hollywood’s biggest rival to discover the artistry, organized chaos, music, dance, politics, and unique characters that have led to Bollywood’s overwhelming popularity in Australia.

Bollywood, the Indian film industry centered in Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay), traces its roots back to the early 20th century. Back in the mid-1980s, I had visited India, it was well-known that Bollywood was churning out films at a rapid pace, each carrying a unique theme. The passion and music of that era gave birth to the term “Bollywood,” a portmanteau of “Bombay” and “Hollywood,” reflecting its inspiration from the American film industry and its location in Mumbai.

The journey of Indian cinema began with the release of “Raja Harishchandra” in 1913, often regarded as the first full-length Indian feature film. This marked the birth of the Indian film industry, which eventually evolved into the global powerhouse known as Bollywood. Over the decades, Bollywood has grown to become one of the world’s largest and most influential film industries, predominantly producing films in Hindi but also exploring multiple languages and genres.

“Brand Bollywood Downunder” offers an insightful exploration of Bollywood’s rich history, highlighting its significant role in shaping Indian cinema and culture. Today, it continues to be a major player in the global entertainment industry, producing a diverse range of films that resonate with both Indian and international audiences.

Director Anupam Sharma, who has faced challenges as a filmmaker, delivers a timely homage to the world’s most prolific and colorful film industry. The documentary offers a unique perspective on the Australian reaction to Bollywood’s presence, capturing the well-meaning, chaotic, and unpredictable responses as it made its mark on iconic Australian locations.

This documentary is a celebration of a rich part of Australian film culture, shedding light on an industry that has captured Australian hearts while keeping its hidden underbelly and scams under wraps, at least until this documentary’s release.

The film features interviews with prominent figures, including Anupam Kher (Actor & Teacher), Jacqui Feeney (CEO, Screen Queensland), Farhan Akhtar (Director & Actor), Hon. Ted Baillieu (Former Premier of Victoria), Fardeen Feroz Khan (Actor), Julie Marlow (Senior Policy Consultant, SPAA), Tammy Bartaia (International Actress, TV Presenter, and Author), Sajid Nadiadwala (Director and Producer), and Ritesh Sidhwani (Producer). These individuals provide fascinating insights into the Bollywood-Australia connection.

In 2010, the servicing of Bollywood in Australia reached new heights with the introduction of Bollywood policies and substantial government and private sector investments in ventures with Bollywood ties. Yet, surprisingly, this is when Bollywood shoots in Australia nearly came to a halt. The documentary explores what happened to Australia’s love affair with Bollywood and whether it lost its luster, providing surprising answers that will leave Australians intrigued.

Told through the voice of Bollywood, this documentary delves into its journey, its magic, its dark side, and how this unique, often misunderstood genre found its way into the hearts of millions. Much like an immigrant coming to Australia, Bollywood must navigate unfamiliar territory to make a home in its adopted land. “Brand Bollywood Downunder” uncovers a colorful roller coaster set against the mesmerizing backdrop of the Australian landscape.

This documentary is a must-watch for filmmakers and film enthusiasts alike. It offers an opportunity to enjoy the rich history of Bollywood and anticipate the continued influence of Indian cinema down under. With its broad audience appeal and potential for success, “Brand Bollywood Downunder” promises to be a captivating cinematic experience, leaving viewers energized, especially when the vibrant dance and music sequences light up the screen.

Mark your calendars for its release on November 2, 2023.
