Film Review: Conclave

Conclave, a 2024 political thriller directed by Edward Berger and written by Peter Straughan, adapts Robert Harris’s 2016 novel into a gripping cinematic experience. With a stellar cast featuring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Sergio Castellitto, and Isabella Rossellini, the film delves into the intense and secretive process of a papal conclave. At its heart is Cardinal Thomas Lawrence (Fiennes), who orchestrates the election of the next pope while uncovering hidden scandals and secrets about the candidates.
The film left me with much to reflect on, particularly its ending, which I dare not spoil. Suffice it to say, the conclusion is thought-provoking and lingers long after the credits roll.
Edward Berger’s direction is masterful, building tension and drama with precision. Ralph Fiennes delivers an outstanding performance as Cardinal Lawrence, capturing the character’s gravitas and internal struggles with finesse. His portrayal anchors the film, bringing depth to its intricate narrative.
The production design and cinematography are exceptional. The set designers’ recreation of the Sistine Chapel is meticulous, though they took creative liberties with the Domus Sanctae Marthae, presenting it as more austere and prison-like to heighten the film’s dramatic tension. Costume designer Lisy Christl’s dedication to authenticity is evident, with research trips to Gammarelli, Tirelli Costumi, and Roman museums. She chose a cardinal red inspired by 17th-century vestments, a hue she found more visually striking and harmonious with the film’s aesthetic.
Conclave premiered at the 51st Telluride Film Festival on August 30, 2024, and was later released in theaters by Focus Features in the United States on October 25 and by Black Bear UK in the United Kingdom on November 29. It garnered critical acclaim for its performances, direction, screenplay, and cinematography, amassing $69.2 million globally. Recognized as one of the top ten films of 2024 by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute, it earned six Golden Globe nominations, winning Best Screenplay. At the 30th Critics’ Choice Awards.
As a fan of political thrillers, I thoroughly enjoyed Conclave. Its compelling narrative, stellar performances, and meticulous craftsmanship make it a must-watch. I highly recommend this film to anyone who appreciates thoughtful, suspenseful storytelling.
