Running time: 85 minutes

The Guilty is the latest creation from writer/director Gustav Möller. It is a 85 minute thrilling Danish film.

The Guilty is a thrilling film based around Asger Holm (played by Jakob Cedergren), an emergency services phone operator from Denmark who is under stress as a pivotal event is a mere day away. Matters become even more tense as he receives a call from a woman named Iben Østergard (Played by Jessica Dinnage) who is in a distressing situation. The story takes a few twists and turns and it is truly fascinating to see Asger deal with his existing stress whilst becoming more and more invested in helping Iben. Jakob Cedergren does an exceptional job at playing a well rounded character in such a limited space. Additionally Jessica Dinnage makes you truly care about the characters of Iben despite only ever hearing her voice.

This film was directed and written by Gustav Moller. This was his first feature film and he did a brilliant job at presenting the various characters as realistic multi dimensional people. This is more commendable due to the setting of the film and how there weren’t as many setting changes or movement at all to flesh out the character. To build a captivating cast under these conditions is remarkable.

Neither of the main two actors (Cedergren and Dinnage) have been in any English productions. This is a shame as both are talented actors who would create some truly brilliant characters. This being said, they both seem to have relative success with Danish and some French productions having been in a libraries worth of films and television show (including those on Netflix).

This film has already received some well deserved recognition. In terms of awards, it has picked up a TIFF Audience Award for its director as well as multiple Robert Awards (the Danish equivalent of Oscars) for ‘Leading Role’, ‘Supporting Role’, ‘Best Director’, ‘Best Editing’, ‘Best Sound Design’, ‘Best Original Screenplay’ and ‘Best Danish Film’. The film has also received recognition in the states as it was screened in the Sundance Film Festival as part of the ‘World Cinema Competition’ section as well as also being selected as the Danish entry in the ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ category in the upcoming 91st Academy Awards.

This Guilty is a film that keeps the pace and found myself glued to the screen eagerly waiting to see how the many plot lines would conclude.

RATE Highly recommended for action drama seekers.
