Hard Truths is the latest feature film from writer-director Mike Leigh. Shot in May and June 2023 and produced by Georgina Lowe under their company Thin Man Films, the story unfolds in London, exploring the complexities of family relationships in a post-pandemic world.
At the center of the film is a riveting performance by Marianne Jean-Baptiste, who recently won a BAFTA for Best Actress for her role as Pansy. A deeply unhappy wife and mother, Pansy is a hypochondriac consumed by anger, directing her frustrations at everyone around her. Her husband Curtley, played by David Webber, is a successful plumber who has learned to endure her constant outbursts. Their son Moses, played by Tuwaine Barrett, is in his early twenties, unemployed, and spends most of his time shut away in his bedroom or aimlessly wandering the streets. Pansy sees him as wasting his life, further fueling the tension in their already strained household.
In contrast, her sister Chantelle, played by Michele Austin, embraces life with warmth and humor. She runs a thriving hairdressing salon, enjoys being a single mother, and has a close bond with her daughters—Kayla, who works in product development for a cosmetics company, and Aleisha, a trainee lawyer. Their home is filled with laughter, a stark difference from the anger and resentment that consume Pansy’s world.
As the story unfolds, Pansy’s confrontational nature brings her into conflict with nearly everyone she meets—a doctor, a dentist, a shop assistant, an irate motorist, and even fellow shoppers in a supermarket queue. Leigh’s signature style of character-driven storytelling makes these interactions feel painfully real, immersing the audience in the raw and uncomfortable truth of her existence.
Mike Leigh has built a career on bringing deeply human stories to life. His first feature film, Bleak Moments (1971), won the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival and the Golden Hugo at Chicago in 1972. This was followed by a series of acclaimed television films before he moved on to a string of influential feature films, including High Hopes (1988), Life Is Sweet (1990), Naked (1993), Secrets & Lies (1996), Topsy-Turvy (1999), Vera Drake (2004), Happy-Go-Lucky (2008), Another Year (2010), Mr. Turner (2014), and Peterloo (2018).
His process is unique, blending writing, rehearsing, and filming into a fluid creative experience that allows actors to fully develop their characters through improvisation and exploration. This approach brings an unparalleled authenticity to his films, making them feel deeply personal and emotionally resonant.
Hard Truths is a challenging film, one that doesn’t offer easy resolutions. Watching a character as volatile as Pansy is not always comfortable, but Marianne Jean-Baptiste delivers a powerhouse performance that demands attention. With Leigh’s signature direction, rich character development, and a story that lingers long after the credits roll, this is a film that stays with you.
