LION, THE AUSTRALIAN FILM THAT ROARED, NOMINATED FOR FOUR GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS INCLUDING BEST PICTURE
Lion, the Australian film starring Dev Patel, Nicole Kidman, Rooney Mara and David Wenham, has been nominated for four Golden Globe Awards overnight.
The film has been nominated for Best Picture, Nicole Kidman has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress, and Dev Patel has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Composers Dustin O’Halloran and Hauschka have also been nominated for Best Original Score.
“This is an Australian film and an Australian story made by an Australian production company. These nominations are so well deserved and Transmission is immensely proud to release LION in Australia on January 19,” said Transmission Film’s Richard Payten.
LION stars Nicole Kidman, Dev Patel, Rooney Mara, and David Wenham and is produced by the Academy-Award® producers of The Kings Speech, Emile Sherman and Iain Canning, and Angie Fielder. Director is Garth Davis (Top of the Lake).
Based on the true story of Saroo Brierley, LION was adapted for the screen by Luke Davies from Saroo’s autobiography ‘A Long Way Home’. At the age of five, Saroo was lost on a train which took him thousands of kilometers across India, away from home and family. Saroo survived alone on the streets of Kolkata, before ultimately being adopted by Tasmanian couple, Sue and John Brierley. Twenty five years later, armed with only a handful of memories, his unwavering determination, and the revolutionary technology Google Earth, he set out to find his lost family and finally return to his first home.
Producer Emile Sherman said: “From the moment I first heard Saroo’s incredible true story, I wanted to make a film about his life that would resonate with audiences around the world. It is thrilling to receive these nominations which recognise the work of our immensely talented director Garth Davis and our amazing cast and crew.”
LION is the winner of more North American film festival awards than any other film this year. It was first runner-up in the People’s Choice Awards at the Toronto International Film Festival following its world premiere there in September. It has gone on to win audience awards at the Mill Valley, Austin, Middleburg, Chicago and Heartland (Indianapolis) Film Festivals.
A Transmission Films release, LION opens in cinemas across Australia on January 19. Nicole Kidman, Dev Patel, David Wenham, and Garth Davis will attend the red carpet Australian premiere next Monday December 19 at the State Theatre, Sydney.
