The cinematic energy was palpable at Event Cinemas Mt Gravatt yesterday evening 23rd March as the cast, crew, and a select group of invited guests gathered for the exclusive first screening of Hard Luck Man. The short feature, which was filmed across Brisbane in early January of this year, serves as the ambitious debut project for Junction Productions. Seeing the gritty, atmospheric work finally hitting the big screen created an immediate buzz, marking a significant milestone for the emerging creative team.
The evening was a celebration of the vision shared by partners James Cook and Bodi Lehmann. Cook, who served as writer, director, and producer, also stepped in front of the camera for a small acting role alongside Lehmann, his co-writer and fellow actor. The duo expressed their delight at finally being able to share the finished product with the collaborators who brought the story to life. Hosted by the film’s Producer and Consultant, Caroline Russo, the event featured an intimate post-screening Q&A session. Russo introduced the film’s rising star, lead actor Ramey Warda, and the project’s outstanding female Director of Photography, Jay Daviadams, whose observational lens provided the film with its grounded, realistic aesthetic.
Hard Luck Man is a haunting exploration set against the quiet margins and late-night spaces of Brisbane. The story follows Mick, a withdrawn young man caught in the volatile aftermath of a failed stick-up. As he drifts through motels and empty streets, the boundaries between control and surrender begin to dissolve. Haunted by the weight of his circumstances and the stinging embarrassment of “failing fantastically,” Mick struggles to keep pace while the world around him moves forward. Through fragmented encounters and moments of uneasy stillness, he is forced to confront the slow, painful realization that escape may no longer be possible—neither from the people around him nor from himself.
The film’s exploration of masculinity, isolation, and the fragile line between survival and self-destruction resonated deeply with the audience. Received with enthusiastic applause and exceptional feedback during the Q&A, Hard Luck Man proved to be a powerful introduction to the capabilities of Junction Productions. With its premiere a resounding success, the film is now being finalized for its journey onto the 2026 film festival circuit, where it is expected to continue its momentum on the global stage.
