RACHAEL COLTRONA
HUSH HUSH BIZ SINGLE REVIEW
Notting Hill
Rachael Coltrona, the gifted Australian singer-songwriter, offers a captivating new single with Notting Hill. Drawing inspiration from a fortuitous experience in London, this track is a shining example of Coltrona’s ability to convert personal experiences into resonant musical stories. Timed with the 25th anniversary of the cherished film Notting Hill, the song intertwines rich storytelling with a lush, textured soundscape. The genesis of Notting Hill lies in a memorable, though disappointing, London encounter where Coltrona was stood up on a blind date. This twist of fate led her to the iconic bookstore from the film, a place where she found both solace and inspiration. Reflecting on this moment, Coltrona penned heartfelt lyrics during her tube ride home, which evolved into the poignant track we hear today. The song opens with evocative key sounds and lush vocal textures, establishing a reflective atmosphere. The intro flows effortlessly into a pop friendly verse melody that immediately secures the listener’s attention. An electric piano introduces recurring melodic motifs, creating a melancholic yet luminous mood, further enriched by a haunting synth hook.
The pre-chorus builds subtly, leading into a chorus that showcases Coltrona’s expressive voice, followed by a distinctive keyboard riff. A synth arpeggio plays a dominant rhythmic role throughout the track. The second verse and pre-chorus return, reinforcing the song’s catchy hooks. A near-spoken refrain in the bridge adds a unique dimension, while the final chorus ends in a surprising yet comforting way. The lyrics, crafted during a moment of introspection, beautifully capture the essence of finding hope and resilience in unexpected places. ‘I’ve always loved Notting Hill and discovering that bookstore during a difficult moment was like a scene from the movie come to life,’ Coltrona shares. ‘It reminded me that sometimes, being stood up or facing a setback can lead to beautiful and unexpected opportunities, so much so I went back to London and made my video right in the same bookstore as the movie.’ Notting Hill is a notable addition to Coltrona’s repertoire, highlighting her commitment to producing authentic, heartfelt music.
