ION SKY
HUSH HUSH BIZ SINGLE REVIEW
Walk Through Fire
Walk Through Fire is the new single for emerging Australian hard rock outfit Ion Sky and the lead track from their new EP Regeneration. The latest release is the third single for the band, which comprises Mike Joseph (lead vocals), Mark Savoia (guitar and vocals), Leigh Sciore (drums), Jake James (guitar and vocals) and Matt Goddard (bass and vocals). The new one is an explosive combination of hard rock riffs, soaring melodic lines and unquestionable dynamism and energy. Following the band’s first two releases, Round The Neck and Devil’s Corner, Walk Through Fire captures its essence with its unique merging of firepower and musical sensibilities. Kicking off with a subdued opening and clean guitar backgrounded by ambient-style textures, the track proceeds into the first verses in this way until a pre-chorus directs us to the chorus. From this point, the guitar riffs bolster the mood change, stepping up the intensity alongside the urgent rhythmic pulse and accents and the vocal performance, whose layers of supporting vocals help expand the section and give it more sheen. With its long notes and two-chord progression, the chorus enhances the hook, eventually leading to a resolve that neatly transposes into another version of the dominant guitar riff, thickened by the band’s syncopated muscle.
Another cycle of the verse and chorus follow, segueing into a bridge encompassing a modified guitar riff and a spoken word refrain, reminiscent of a 90’s post-grunge style yet attached to the song seamlessly and with a self-assured application. A measured pause follows, creating the right kind of contrast that leads to a variegated version of the chorus, complete with slight melodic changes fuelled by an emotional charge that blends well with the resolving hooks. Walk Through Fire is sure to please Ion Sky’s growing fanbase and prove a tantalising taster for their EP.
