The first sod will be turned on a $4.5 million upgrade to Jimboomba Park on Friday 8 July, which will transform the site to a modern purpose-built centre for netball, rugby league, touch football as well as providing a covered equestrian dressage arena and show jumping rings for a pony club.
Mayor of the City of Logan, Luke Smith, said the park’s layout had been planned from scratch locating facilities where they would work best for residents, clubs and patrons.
“In consultation with the clubs we’re building a tremendous mixed use sports park that caters for team sports, families and the pony club,” he said.
“In anticipation of increased patronage we’ve added extra parking areas – including 30 parks each for the Netball Association and Jimboomba Thunder as well as new parking for the Jimboomba Pony Club, which allows for horse float parking,” he said.
Chair of the Sports and Community Services Committee, Councillor Steve Swenson said Logan City Council had invested significant funding in the park in recent years but the latest project was by far the most significant.
“Council is investing more than $3 million and $1.5 million in additional funding is being provided from a state government Get Playing Plus grant to enable the park to be completely transformed.
“The pony club will be relocated to the southern end to enable development of an undercover dressage arena and a show jumping arena.
“We’re also building a new netball clubhouse, change rooms for rugby league and touch football as well as additional fields for team sports.”
Division 11 Councillor, Trevina Schwarz said the long awaited project would result in a resurgence in sport and activity in Jimboomba and neighbouring areas.
“This upgrade is desperately needed by the residents, families and wider community who use the park for sport and recreation,” she said.
“We need to give our children and sportspeople the best opportunity to engage in sport and healthy outdoor activities.
“It’s been a long time coming, but when it’s finished, Jimboomba Park will provide a wonderful sporting precinct for the region.”
