Sydney Theatre Company, in partnership with Michael Cassel and Gaynor Wheatley, has officially announced that vocal powerhouse Michael Paynter will take on the title role in the world-premiere production of Whispering Jack: The John Farnham Musical.
Opening this November at the Roslyn Packer Theatre, the production marks the 40th anniversary of the 1986 album that became the highest-selling Australian record of all time. Under the direction of STC Artistic Director Mitchell Butel, the musical will chronicle the high-stakes journey of a financially struggling Farnham as he recorded the landmark album in a suburban Melbourne garage.

Highlights of the Announcement
The Perfect Lead: Michael Paynter—fresh off a Sydney Theatre Award-winning turn as Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar—was chosen for his “golden and powerful” voice and a charm described as “spookily Farnham-like.”
The Creative Powerhouse: Directed by Mitchell Butel, the show features a book by Jack Yabsley (Gold Diggers) and is produced in association with the Michael Cassel Group (Hamilton) and TalentWorks (Finding the Voice).
A Story of Resilience: The narrative focuses on the five years that transformed Farnham from a “broke former teen idol” to the “Voice of a Nation,” highlighting his partnership with wife Jill and manager Glenn Wheatley.
The Music: Expect a soundtrack of era-defining hits including You’re the Voice, Pressure Down, Age of Reason, and A Touch of Paradise.
