PETER GARRETT – A Version of Now – TRACK BY TRACK
1. Tall Trees
This song dropped out of the sky, landed on my shoulder. In my own mind at least, I was back in the business of writing and singing but I was carrying a lot of stuff that happened before. I was looking for some free associations to describe that experience.
2. I’d Do It Again
Look, I knew what I was doing. Politics isn’t a fairytale experience for anybody and I didn’t expect it to be. But I believed enough to go and do it. A lot of times people ask the question ‘Are you sorry?’ or ‘I bet you’re glad you’re out.’ That’s pretty much missing the point. No. I’d do it again.
3. No Placebo
It’s like imagining you’re in a hot air balloon. You’ve seen and done a lot of things in your life and you’ve lost the necessity to go out and experience it all but you’re aware there’s a boiling cauldron of history and issues rolling around the times that you live in.
4. Homecoming
After being out there for so long, I did find myself back at this place called home and it was really wrapping me up in its arms. But at the same time I’m looking at a whole range of other people that have left their homes because it’s untenable for them, or they don’t have homes at all.
5. Kangaroo Tail
This one’s been around a while. I couldn’t remember how far I’d got with it so I went looking through some of my old scribbles. Originally I thought it was a folk song, like Botany Bay. But it’s not really in my temperament to do a bush ballad.
6. Great White Shark
[The Oils] mucked around with this one a long time ago. What I’m essentially saying is that humans and animals are different. It’s also a meditation on where we place animals in our lives. How do we think about them at a time when the natural world is under such huge threat? There’s defiance in the chorus about where I feel I want to be, and where I hope others want to be.
7. Only One and 8. Night and Day
I never shared the stereotypical view of the Oils as being two-dimensional: political songs and songs about Australia. There’s a lot more abstraction on the albums. [Love] is such an overworked field but eventually, when you’re in a room by yourself and it’s the one thing that you’re thinking about, you’ve got to try and get it down and make it work for you.
9. It Still Matters
It was the last song I wrote for the record and I wanted something that bookended this idea of the experience that I’ve had, but went a little bit further with a mood and a picture that could be painted about how I feel through all of this, and to get to what I’m thinking now.
