Queen’s Baton arrives in Queensland – 101 days to go until Commonwealth Games
The arrival of the Queen’s Baton in Queensland today marks 101 days to the start of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018), Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said today.
“It’s fitting tomorrow – Christmas Day – will be 100 days to the biggest gift to Queensland – our biggest ever event, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will be the biggest event in Queensland’s history,” the Premier said.
“It will be our opportunity – and the opportunity of thousands of elite athletes – to shine in front of the world.”
The Premier said the Queen’s Baton Relay was an opportunity for Australians to get involved and excited about the Games.
“After arriving in Brisbane this morning, the Baton’s first stop for the Queen’s Baton Relay in Australia is the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Boxing Day,” she said.
It will travel over 40,000 kilometres through every Australian state and territory with the Baton to be carried by about 3800 Australians.
“After travelling through all other states and territories, the Queen’s Baton will spend its final 33 days in Queensland.
“Arriving into the Torres Strait before making its way south, it will showcase to the world the many landscapes of our great state – from the tropical coastal areas to lush rainforests and our beautiful outback.”
“More than 1800 batonbearers who were nominated by their community will carry the Queen’s Baton throughout Queensland. The oldest is 100-year-old Mr Bill Bruce from Nebo and the youngest is Corbin Easton from Caloundra who is 10-years-old.”
The Relay started on Commonwealth Day, Monday 13 March 2017, at Buckingham Palace when Her Majesty’s message was put inside of the Baton.
The distinctive design of the GC2018 Queen’s Baton captures the boundless energy of the Gold Coast. In form and inspiration, the Baton is a symbol of our past, present and future.
The Queen’s Baton arrives on the Gold Coast for the XXI Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony on 4 April 2018, where HRH The Prince of Wales will remove Her Majesty’s message from the Baton and read it aloud to declare the Games open.
