The world has lost a musical icon with the passing of Grammy Award-winning singer Roberta Flack at the age of 88. Known for her deeply emotive voice and signature style that blended soul, jazz, and R&B, Flack leaves behind a legacy of songs that have become the soundtrack of love and introspection for millions.
Her publicist released this statement. “We are heartbroken that the glorious Roberta Flack passed away this morning February 24, 2025,” publicist Elaine Schock said in a statement.
“She died peacefully surrounded by her family. Roberta broke boundaries and records. She was also a proud educator.”
Flack revealed in November 2022 that she had been diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and could no longer sing.
ALS is a progressive illness that impacts nerve cells and causes paralysis and death.
Born on February 10, 1937, in Black Mountain, North Carolina, Flack was a classically trained pianist who transitioned into the world of popular music with effortless grace. Her breakthrough came in the early 1970s with “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” a song that catapulted her to international stardom after it was featured in Clint Eastwood’s 1971 film Play Misty for Me. The song won the Grammy for Record of the Year and cemented Flack as one of the most profound vocalists of her time.
Her success continued with the unforgettable “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” a deeply resonant ballad that earned her another Grammy for Record of the Year. The song’s haunting lyrics and gentle piano melodies became an instant classic, later inspiring covers and adaptations across generations. She followed up with hits like “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” “Where Is the Love” (with Donny Hathaway), and “The Closer I Get to You,” further solidifying her reputation as a master of heartfelt, soul-stirring music.
Beyond her chart-topping hits, Flack was a trailblazer who broke racial and musical barriers. She was one of the few Black female artists of her era to achieve mainstream success without compromising the depth and integrity of her artistry. A proud educator, she was passionate about music’s ability to inspire and uplift, dedicating much of her later years to music education and humanitarian efforts.
