Second beatbox concert announced in QSOCurrent program!

Brisbane loves beatboxing – particularly when it’s the home-grown international phenomenon Tom Thum performing with members of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra!

Due to high demand for tickets, a second QSO & Tom Thum concert has been announced as a part of the breakthrough QSOCurrent program in May. The second Thum Prints: A concerto contradiction for beatbox and orchestra by Gordon Hamilton with Tom Thum and the QSO will take place at 6pm on Saturday May 16 at Brisbane Powerhouse with tickets on sale now.

A world premiere music event, Thum Prints: A concerto contradiction for beatbox and orchestra hovers somewhere between jazz, hip-hop and an off-the-wall Rite of Spring. Promising to be a moment in music-morphing history, this concert will appeal to fans of both P.Diddy AND Puccini, Eminem AND Mozart!

With more than 32 million hits on the YouTube video of his appearance at TedXTalks in Sydney in late 2013, Tom Thum admits he has “an orchestra in his mouth”. From winning the team battles in the World Beatbox Championships in 2005, to performing on Broadway in New York with the Tom Tom Crew, he has well and truly etched his place in the new music landscape. Raised by the small but accommodating Brisbane hip hop scene, Tom started out as a graffiti writer and a Bboy but slowly rose to recognition through his insane talent.

“The Queensland Symphony Orchestra came to me a few months ago with a rocking idea for a piece: a concerto for beatboxer and orchestra,” said composer Gordon Hamilton, himself a superstar young composer and Artistic Director of The Australian Voices.

Thum Prints: A concerto contradiction for beatbox and orchestra is part of a four-concert breakthrough program called QSOCurrent to be held over May 15 and 16. It’s a morphing of modern sounds, technology and talent with the classical heritage and strength of the state’s orchestra, and features fourground-breaking world premiere events. The line-up of stars reads like a New Music’s Most Wanted – the exciting and highly applauded Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra; internationally acclaimed beatbox champion Tom Thum; electronic musician and Gotye collaborator Tim Shiel; one of the composing world’s brightest stars in Gordon Hamilton; celebrated contemporary trio Trichotomy, theRafael Karlen Quartet, Kupka’s Piano, The Australian Voices and more.
