Academy Award winner Brie Larson leads an international cast in a chilling new creature-horror film shot across Victoria, with SKELETONS set to hit cinemas in 2027.
Hollywood has arrived in Victoria with SKELETONS, a new creature-horror feature starring Academy Award winner Brie Larson, with production now wrapped following filming across some of the state’s most striking locations.
Directed by JT Mollner and produced by J.J. Abrams, SKELETONS is based on Philip Fracassi’s short story Fail-Safe and promises a dark, unsettling story told through the eyes of a young boy.
The story follows a young boy who begins to realise that his parents are hiding a disturbing secret — one that forces him to question the true nature of his mother.
Filming took place across regional Victoria, including locations in the Yarra Valley, Dandenong Ranges, Mornington Peninsula and Werribee, as well as at the former Neighbours studio in Nunawading.
The production brought together an impressive international cast alongside Larson, including Kyle Gallner, John Goodman, Willa Fitzgerald, Ione Skye and Keith Carradine, with Daithí Ó hAragáin also among the cast.
Victorian producers Paul Currie and Mario Biancacci, whose credits include Ricky Stanicky, Better Man and I Play Rocky, are also attached to the project.
SKELETONS has provided a major boost to Victoria’s local screen industry, creating around 635 jobs and engaging approximately 300 local businesses, from accommodation and catering to transport, medical services and specialist screen companies.
The production will continue its post-production and visual-effects work in Victoria, including through the newly established Chroma Film Lab in Brunswick East.
For director JT Mollner, the experience of working with Victoria’s local film crews has been a standout.
“The local crew in Victoria has exceeded every expectation. Our approach is ambitious, bold and visually distinctive.”

With J.J. Abrams behind the production and Brie Larson front and centre, SKELETONS is shaping up as one of the more intriguing horror projects to emerge from the Australian screen industry.
SKELETONS is scheduled for theatrical release on June 4, 2027, through Sony Pictures Releasing.
