Spider-Man: Brand New Day Shatters Records with $30.4M Australian Box Office Opening

Tom Holland’s return as the iconic web-slinger has delivered a record-breaking opening at the Australian box office, with Columbia Pictures’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day grossing $30.4 million over its initial four-day season (Thursday through Sunday).
The sensational box office debut marks the highest-grossing opening weekend in Australia since 2019 and stands as the second-largest opening weekend in Australian cinema history, trailing only Avengers: Endgame ($34.1M in 2019) while comfortably outpacing Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($27.3M in 2015).
Record-Breaking Australian Launch

The blockbuster run established several major milestones across the country:
Largest Opening of 2026: Outperforming all major releases year-to-date.
Second-Biggest Opening of All Time in Australia: Surpassed only by 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
Biggest Non-Holiday Opening Ever: Setting a new standard for non-festive releases.
Franchise & Studio Records: Represents the biggest local debut for any Spider-Man title and the largest opening in Sony Pictures Releasing Australia’s history.

Historic Daily Highs: Set all-time Australian box office records for both a single Saturday ($9.3M) and a single Sunday ($8.18M).
Currently playing at more than 315 locations nationwide, the movie has drawn massive crowds back to suburban and city multiplexes alike.
“SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY has not only created brand new Box office records but underscores the fact that going to see movies at the cinema is well & truly back!” said Stephen Basil-Jones, Managing Director of Sony Pictures Releasing Australia. “This is a win for everyone… fans and audiences of Spider-Man are just loving the film, the cinemas that are playing it & the industry at large which is making a big, bold announcement that cinema is back, stronger than ever.”
Global Impact and Critical Reception
The local triumph mirrors a worldwide phenomenon. Globally, Spider-Man: Brand New Day swung to a staggering USD $927 million opening weekend, including a USD $355 million domestic U.S. launch—making it the second-largest North American opening in history behind Avengers: Endgame.
The film has earned wide acclaim from both critics and moviegoers. It currently holds a 90% Certified Fresh critics score on Rotten Tomatoes alongside a 98% audience rating, representing the highest audience score in the history of the Spider-Man film franchise.
