vmsQUEEN VICTORIA/ VMS in the Spotlight.

Vikki Martin Smith is based on the Gold Coast, and heads by day being station programe manager for Radio Metro. Vikki is also one of the busiest Dj that goes under the name of Queen Victoria in which her profile electrifies big-room house and electro together with her sidekick alias in VMS. This week Hush Hush Biz has put the spotlight on this amazing young lady.

1. Where do you get your inspiration from? and are there any artists in particular that have influenced you over the years?

I get inspiration from so many different things. I love visiting events in different countries and seeing what vibe of music goes down well at clubs overseas, as well as checking out music events such as ADE (Amsterdam Dance Event) where up and coming talent are showcased alongside more established artists. I also get inspiration from listening to radio shows like Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1- Pete Tong always plays a great selection of genres of EDM. I love listening to a variety of old classic house anthems to newer tech house for inspiration for my sets. The 1 DJ who has always inspired me has been Carl Cox. I saw him play & met him for the 1st when I was 15 at a club night called ‘Naughty But Nice’ in Hereford, England and he’s been my #1 inspiration ever since!

2. Who are you listening to at the moment?

Right now, I’m actually listening to Pryda The Future EP (‘Choo’ is epic!). I’m really diggin ‘Sheeple’ by Green Velvet Prok & Fitch and loving anything by Camelphat & Enrico Sangiuliano.

3. Who would you most want to collaborate on music with?

There are so many artists I’d love to collab with! Eric Prydz, Carl Cox, Deadmau5, Mark Knight, Sonny Fodera, Matt Joe, Erick Morillo, Camelphat, Enrico Sangiuliano, LO’99, Poolclvb, Nora En Pure… to the more electro house legends such as Knife Party & Laidback Luke, & trance pioneers Armin Van Buuren & Above & Beyond. The list is endless!

4. . Do you have any DJ goals for 2017?
I’d love to play back in Ibiza again this summer as it’s been a couple of years since I played there.

5. What single night out has been the most memorable for you? As a DJ?

It would probably be the last Stereosonic in Brisbane. It was my first set as VMS for Stereo (I’d played there 3 times as my electro alter ego Queen Victoria), so I got to show case one of my new tracks and had the best day playing tech house to such an appreciative crowd! We all got to hang out at the artist after party with Armin Van Buuren, Axwell, Ingrosso, Galantis & Oliver Heldens … drinking cocktails, listening to unreleased tracks. I was in awe at being surrounded by such musical icons!

6. Can you please tell us a bit about your role at radio metro?

I am the Station Manager & also Music & Programming Director. I have been working at Radio Metro for 11 years- starting off as a presenter and then working my way up to Management. I love my job, work with a great team of people & I get to listen to music all day long, so I have the perfect job 🙂

7.. What is one mistake you see a lot of up and coming DJs making?

Being disrespectful to other DJs and producers on a social media forum…music should be about love & supporting one another, not being negative & aggressive.

8.. What is it that you love about the electronic music scene?

I love that the electronic music scene brings people from all walks of life together- forgetting race, religion and social status…making one big musical family where you feel like you belong.
9. Finally what one piece of advice would you give to upcoming female dj’s entering the edm scene?

My advice to upcoming DJs in the EDM scene is follow your heart and dreams. If you want to be a DJ or producer, immerse yourself in the scene completely and learn from the best. Don’t give up & don’t get disheartened if it takes time to get gigs. For me, there’s no differentiation between male & female DJs other than gender, so my advice is to both guys and girls wanting to break into the industry.

2017 is set to be a busy year with VMS’s next track ‘Detach’ will be out on Yes Yes Records at the end of February, followed by an Asian Tour & Australian tour. Australia Day Vicki will also be at the launch of The Gathering Feel Good Music Festival at Gold Coast At Country Parklands January 26th., Soundcloud:,
