The 39 Steps opened tonight at QPAC, and from the very first moment, you’re swept into a laugh-out-loud romp that never lets up. It’s pure theatrical joy — fast-paced, clever, and brilliantly executed by a cast that is simply to die for.
Front and centre are the incomparable Ian Stenlake and Lisa McCune, who light up the stage with their effortless charm and pitch-perfect comedic timing. What a delight it is to see these two together working as they have had long careers on screen and theatre — their chemistry is electric, and they bring both heart and hilarity to every scene.
Adding to the chaos and comic brilliance are The Umbilical Brothers — David Collins and Shane Dundas — whose physical comedy and razor-sharp delivery take this production to another level. Their energy is infectious, and their timing is nothing short of genius.
Adapted by Patrick Barlow from Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 film, this stage version is a madcap mix of mystery, slapstick, and parody. Under the inspired direction of Damian Ryan, the show moves at lightning speed — full of quick-fire costume changes, inventive staging, and perfectly timed lighting cues. As Shane Dundas shared after the show, Ryan is “one of the most amazing directors to work with,” and it certainly shows in the seamless precision of every moment.
A special mention must go to James Brown for the fabulous costume design. Lisa McCune’s wardrobe is divine — each character she plays brings its own sparkle, and every outfit enhances her charm and versatility on stage and there are some very memorable moments that have you in stitches.
This production is pure theatrical artistry — a masterful blend of physical comedy, sharp dialogue, and boundless creativity. It’s one of the most entertaining nights at the theatre you’ll have this year.
Be quick, Brisbane — The 39 Steps is only here for a limited two-week season following its successful national tour. Word has it there are whispers of more dates next year — so here’s hoping this gem returns!
