Back in 2019, The Book of Mormon had Brisbane audiences laughing until their sides hurt during its acclaimed season at QPAC’s Lyric Theatre. Seven years later, the Tony Award-winning musical has returned to Brisbane, now lighting up the spectacular new Glasshouse Theatre at QPAC, and I’m delighted to say this outrageous comedy is just as brilliantly entertaining the second time around.
Created by South Park masterminds Trey Parker and Matt Stone, together with Oscar, Grammy and Tony Award-winning composer Robert Lopez, The Book of Mormon has become one of the most successful and celebrated musicals of the modern era. Since its Broadway debut in 2011, it has collected multiple Tony Awards, broken box office records around the world and earned a reputation as one of the funniest stage productions ever written.
For those who have never seen it, prepare yourself!
This is not your traditional musical. There are plenty of jaw-dropping moments that will leave you wondering, “Did they really just say that?” The show constantly pushes boundaries with wicked, fearless humour, outrageous satire and laugh-out-loud surprises. It isn’t afraid to challenge convention, and that’s exactly what makes it so incredibly entertaining.
While some moments may shock the uninitiated, they’re all part of the show’s brilliantly crafted comedy. Beneath the outrageous laughs is an unexpectedly heartfelt story about friendship, hope, faith and believing in yourself. It somehow manages to balance irreverent humour with genuine warmth, making the audience laugh one minute and unexpectedly reflect the next.
The story follows two young Mormon missionaries, the confident Elder Price and the socially awkward but lovable Elder Cunningham, who are sent to a remote village in Uganda. Their mission doesn’t quite unfold as planned, leading to a series of hilarious, unpredictable and often wildly absurd situations that have audiences roaring with laughter from beginning to end.
Having seen the Brisbane production back in 2019, I wondered whether it could possibly be as funny the second time around. The answer is an emphatic yes. In fact, knowing some of the famous moments allowed me to appreciate just how clever the writing, music and comic timing really are.
The chemistry between the two leads is absolutely sensational. Sean Johnston as Elder Price delivers a polished performance with exceptional vocals, while Nick Cox as Elder Cunningham is simply a comic powerhouse. His impeccable timing, infectious energy and lovable awkwardness make him impossible not to adore. Together, they create one of the most entertaining partnerships currently on the Australian stage.
From the opening number to the standing ovation, the entire cast performs with boundless energy, precision and enthusiasm. Every ensemble member contributes to the production’s electric atmosphere, supported by slick choreography, vibrant costumes and a superb orchestra that keeps the momentum soaring throughout.
What continues to amaze me is how The Book of Mormon remains as fresh and relevant today as when it first premiered. Great comedy never dates, and this musical proves exactly why it has become a worldwide phenomenon.
Whether you’re returning for another visit or experiencing it for the very first time, this production is guaranteed to leave you laughing long after the curtain falls.
