The world has lost one of entertainment’s great originals.
Tim Curry, the British actor, singer and stage legend whose extraordinary career crossed theatre, film, television and music, has died at the age of 80. Curry died at his Los Angeles home on August 25, 2026, following years of health challenges after suffering a major stroke in 2012. His cause of death has not been disclosed we report in respect of him.
For generations of audiences, Tim Curry was never simply an actor. He was an experience.
With that unmistakable voice, wicked humour, theatrical flamboyance and an ability to make even the most outrageous character completely unforgettable, Curry carved out a place in popular culture that few performers have ever matched.
THE MAN WHO BECAME FRANK-N-FURTER
For many, there will always be one character above all others: Dr Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Curry first played the role on stage before bringing it to the big screen in the 1975 cult classic. His performance transformed the character into one of cinema’s most enduring icons and helped make Rocky Horror a worldwide phenomenon.
It was daring, provocative, funny, sexy and completely fearless.
And that was Tim Curry.
He understood that great performance was about taking risks — and he never seemed frightened of doing exactly that.
FROM THE STAGE TO HOLLYWOOD
Curry’s career was far bigger than Rocky Horror.
He was a formidable stage performer, earning Tony nominations for productions including Amadeus, My Favorite Year and Monty Python’s Spamalot. He also appeared in The Pirates of Penzance and countless other theatrical productions.
On screen, he could be deliciously sinister, wonderfully comic or surprisingly tender.
He gave audiences the unforgettable Wadsworth in Clue, the villainous Lord of Darkness in Legend, Rooster Hannigan in Annie, and the unforgettable Pennywise in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King’s It.
He also appeared in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Muppet Treasure Island, The Three Musketeers and many other films, while his distinctive voice made him a hugely sought-after performer in animation and television.
AND THEN THERE WAS THE MUSIC
Music was another important part of Curry’s creative life.
He possessed a rich, powerful voice and recorded three studio albums — Read My Lips, Fearless and Simplicity — while also bringing his musical talents to stage productions and live performance.
That voice became part of his signature.
You could hear Tim Curry before you saw him — and you knew exactly who it was.
THE STROKE THAT CHANGED HIS LIFE
In July 2012, Curry suffered a major stroke.
It changed his physical life dramatically, leaving him with significant mobility difficulties and requiring a long period of rehabilitation. Yet the stroke did not take away the performer within him.
Curry continued to work, particularly in voice acting, remained connected with fans and made appearances when he could. His determination became another part of his remarkable story.
In 2025, he published his memoir, Vagabond, looking back on an extraordinary life spent moving between stages, studios, characters and worlds.
A LEGACY THAT WILL NEVER FIT INTO ONE ROLE
That may ultimately be Tim Curry’s greatest achievement.
He refused to be defined by one character.
Yes, he gave us Frank-N-Furter.
Yes, he terrified us as Pennywise.
But he also made us laugh, sing, gasp, scream and sometimes simply stop and watch.
He was theatrical without apology. He was eccentric without fear. He understood the power of a great entrance, a great voice and a character that could stay with an audience long after the credits rolled.
Tim Curry didn’t just perform characters.
He inhabited them.
And somewhere tonight, there will be another screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, another audience laughing at Clue, another viewer discovering It, and another generation discovering that extraordinary voice for the first time.
That is the beautiful thing about a true entertainer.
They never really leave us.
