A Star Is Born!
Well, a whole company of them, actually. Announcing the arrival of a brand new theatre company for Brisbane: BIG SCARY ANIMAL.
The company will make its official debut in January with a giant of the American canon, John Patrick Shanley and his arresting drama, Savage in Limbo.
After a sell-out staged reading in mid-2018 the play returns for a full two-week season from January 22.
Big Scary Animal is the brainchild of NIDA graduates Zoe Houghton and Julian Curtis – who have over thirty years of stage and screen experience between them. Together they saw a gap in the theatre landscape for our best actors to flex their creative muscles on contemporary classics that have been overlooked for Brisbane audiences.
Much like the Old Fitzroy theatre in Sydney, Big Scary Animal is growing out of the much-loved Brisbane bar-cafe, Lucky Duck. “Sydney and Melbourne have a great tradition of professional actors performing smaller venues which allows for big artistic risks” Houghton says. “Supporting companies like Big Scary Animal will widen the diversity of the Brisbane theatre landscape for both patrons and practitioners.”
“And having our first production, Savage in Limbo, playing out in an actual bar, gives us an opportunity to reach the non-theatre goer through the power of beer” Curtis adds.
With the support of well-known Brisbane identity Philip Bacon, Big Scary Animal’s production of Savage in Limbo opens at Lucky Duck Bar and Café, Gladstone Road, Highgate Hill on January 22. Performances begin 7pm nightly.
