Split, Sawn and Shaped
Now open

In past generations, people turned wooden logs from the forest into the everyday items they needed like furniture, homes, vehicles and tools.
During the Industrial Revolution, many trade skills were replaced by powered machinery in factories, but traditional ‘handmade’ methods were still used in small towns and villages into the twentieth century.
Andrew MacDonald, Factory Supervisor Cobb+Co Museum, took on the challenge to make a wooden wheel using only hand tools. Visit the display to see the process and the tools used.

EVENTS:

Curator Conversation – Dr Leanne Bateman – Archaeology on the frontier
3 March
2.30pm-3.30pm

Dr Leanne Bateman will present several interesting archaeological discoveries uncovered following excavations at a Native Mounted Police camp called Boralga, on Cape York Peninsula.

Her archaeological exploration on the frontier examines a rich array of objects that enabled her to intimately investigate the daily domestic life within a Native Mounted Police camp. Although historical records document the actions of the Native Mounted Police, only a small portion of these records and published accounts regarding Aboriginal-European frontier interaction attest to the daily lives of the Aboriginal troopers present at these camps.
