Torres Strait Islanders rich and enduring cultures and languages are inextricably linked to the place they call ‘home’. More than just a physical structure, an interconnectedness between people, place and knowledge is their foundation of identity. Now with the threat of rising sea levels, how do Torres Strait Islanders maintain their strong sense of identity and place if home is underwater?
On the 150th anniversary of the Coming of the Light – the introduction of Christianity throughout Torres Strait – Island Futures: What lies ahead for Zenadth Kes? empowers voices and conversations about Torres Strait Islanders’ place and visibility in present-day Australia.
This exhibition explores and celebrates contemporary Torres Strait Islander identity, where visitors to this powerful and vibrant exhibition can discover more than 200 objects and images, interwoven with Islander perspectives and stories, along with a number of works from well-known artists including cinematographer Murray Lui, artists Dylan Mooney, Christopher Bassi, filmmaker Margaret Harvey, photographer Kantesha Takai, and a new commission from world-renowned Erub Arts.

Ipswich in Miniature

Ipswich in Miniature is a celebration of Ipswich’s heritage, history and architecture. Here’s your chance to see the detail and beauty of the city’s most iconic heritage buildings through miniature creations by the Ipswich Mini Crafters. Some of the exquisite tiny creations include the famous drapers Cribb and Foote, CJ Vogler, the Federal Hotel (circa 1907) and Jack Wilson Bakery (circa 1876) plus the Reid & T. Greig Cash Grocers. Anyone who is fascinated by the city of Ipswich won’t want to miss this delightful exhibition.

Spy: Espionage in Australia

Often cloaked in myth, the stories of spies are sometimes stranger than fiction.
Spy: Espionage in Australia reveals the personal experiences of secret agents and the curious history of espionage and counter-espionage in Australia, from Federation through to the present day.
See genuine spy equipment, surveillance images and candid interviews with ASIO officers. Play the part of a secret agent in the interactive family trail. Test your skills at codebreaking and reading invisible ink.
Spy brings the stories of spies out of the shadows and into the light.
A national touring exhibition developed and presented by the National Archives of Australia.

Might and Muscle

Might and Muscle explores the history of Queensland’s infrastructure system through the mighty machines on display, covering the eras of human, steam, and petrol power. Featuring the famous Beyer Garratt No. 1009 locomotive, tractors donated from the Thiess family collection, and engines restored by our own collections team, the sheer size and scale of this exhibition is very impressive.

Great Barrier Reef

A new photographic exhibition Great Barrier Reef, features of 20 images of the coral wonderland all photographed by Queensland Museum Network photographer Gary Cranitch.
The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s most extensive coral reef system. It extends for 2300 km along the Queensland coast and is more than 300,000sq km in area. The Reef consists of 3500 individual reefs, 600 rocky islands and 300 coral and sand cays.

Bringing to life one of the most technologically significant times in the history of mankind, the exhibition covers an epic period of history, from the triumphant victory of Julius Caesar over the Gaul in 52 BC, to the transformation of Rome from a Republic into the mighty Roman Empire.

Antiquities Revealed

From the vault of the museum’s collection, Antiquities Revealed showcases objects from ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian civilisations, connecting you with the past and providing insights into daily life, personal dress, technology, beliefs, art and more.
Marvel at the tiny, the intricate and the well-loved items of everyday life from centuries ago. Move through the Mediterranean absorbing intriguing stories across space and time with more than 150 iconic objects.
From the pottery used in daily life to the exquisitely adorned bell kraters (large mixing vessels), glass perfume bottles from Greek scent shops, and fragments of mosaic pavement from Pompeii, see the remnants of peoples’ lives, passions, creativity and innovation.

Little Learners
Every Friday during school terms

These exciting sessions give our youngest visitors the opportunity to get up close with real objects and specimens, act out a story and have fun while learning through hands-on activities.
Recommended for ages 3-6, each week our Little Learners presenter will guide kids on an interactive journey to explore items and themes related to the museum’s collections.
Little Learners is free with museum admission. Spaces are limited, however no bookings are required.
Families are encouraged to arrive at 9.45am for a 10am start. Sessions will run for approximately 45 minutes.
