The one of a kind summer extravaganza Wonderland Festival kicked off for another year at Brisbane Powerhouse on Thursday 23 November 2017.
The festival promises and does not disappoint delivering an array of profound performances over twenty shows featuring an eclectic mix of comedy, circus, burlesque, music and theatre.
The Powerhouse is transformed into a vaudeville wonderland with outdoor performances, night markets and carnival antics.
With a range of internationally acclaimed acts alongside our very own talented Brisbane performers, the opening night thrilled with the unique stylings of Mama Alto and her Torch Songs collection.
A self professed diva, Mama Alto’s rich voice, sultry persona and non- binary trans femme gender identity charms her audiences.
With the support of her exceptionally talented musical director Miss Chief, Mama Alto’s interpretation of iconic torch songs transports the audience to another time and place where the notion of gender conformity and social constructs not only do not matter but fail to register.
While Mama’s Alto’s distinctive performance style may sound alienating and unfamiliar, there is both a fragility and power to her renditions that resonates leaving her audiences feeling like they belong in the world she creates.
With 12 nights of artistic celebration on offer, the Powerhouse continues to champion local artists with 100% of net box office proceeds going directly to the performers.
